hey guys.

I am going to give my pc an upgrade on the next couple of weeks, and am stuck deciding between these two cards.

Specs currently:

AMD 3800+ x2
MSI K8N-Neo4
6600GT
1GB RAM

Upgrade:

+ 1GB RAM
Coolermaster extreme 430W PSU
and the crux of the issue; X1950GT/7900GS

X1950GT
7900GS

So help me decide! (and please dont recommend an 8800GTS - my budget does NOT stretch that far)

Thanks!

In this case I think I'd probably go with the ATI card because it has more memory. I haven't personally used either but I've heard some "not so good things" about the 7900.

I posted a thread about this before. If your leaving the card at stock go with the x1950pro if you are going to overclock its the 7900gs.

Edit if the 1950gt is better then the pro this probaly is differn't

Go with the 7900, i would, plus the ATI drivers suck.

A lot of people don't like the ATi CCC, but their drivers are every bit as good, if not better, than the current lot of NV drivers.

If you're going to have them at stock speeds, the X1900 is better value for money and also a little faster (Plus double memory, which isnn't bad after all either.)

Anyway, I'd recommend to wait till the end of the CeBit (mid of March) and go for something from the 8 series or something from the cheaper 7 series then.

Definatly there are going to be a whole new load of diffrent 8xxx serires coming out by then and as said even if you carnt afford the cheap one of them the 7xxx will be much cheaper, so yeah just wait it wont be long and will make hell of a diffrence.

The 8600 Ultra will be about $180. Assuming this, I think 170-180€ should be appropriate.

PS: I'm also going for this card.

$180 US or AU? (it would be ~$230 AUD, so it doesn't really matter anyway). And I am assuming that the ultra is better than the GT?

EDIT: a quick Google search has told me that the ultra is the better card. Guess i should have done that before lol

Will the 430W coolermaster be enough power for either?

As a tech professional, and an Nvidia Fanboy, I would say the 1950GT is better.

have you upgraded your OS to vista yet?  If you have or are planning on it, see if the drivers are available yet.  I installed vista 64 bit only to find out that the sli capability for my Nvidia isn't out yet... Bummer. back to XP until Nvidia gets their shit together.
