I loved chinese new year when i was in Singapore, get a week of school and go down to chinatown to watch the festivals and parades dragon dances etc. Anytime off school is good, especially chinese new year, food all round! WOO!

"gong xi fa cai" or  恭喜发财 means hope (you) will get rich, commonly said with "xin nian kuai le" - happy new year.
The other pronunciation is in Cantonese. Chinese is not just one language phonetically, but ten major regional dialects.
Hope Buddha blesses you in the new year! (By the way, people born on the year of the Snake watch out, it's a bad luck year!)

You're fine man. Spark doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Gong chi fa chai is Mandarin, which is what they speak where you are in Shanghai. Cantonese is Gong hei fat choi.

It funny that he's correcting you and then says "did I mix up the words there..."
