I've only installed Vista today so this will be brief, but I thought I'd post it here. So, here goes:

I disobeyed everyone's advice (bar one or two - you know who you are!) and installed Vista Ultimate. I did the upgrade so I had minimal drivers to do. All I had to download was:

- ATI-CCC Vista 1900 Drivers. Although the XP Drivers did work fine, I thought I'd better get the Vista drivers anyway.
- Creative Audigy 2 ZS Beta Drivers

I heard many complaints with driver issues on Vista - especially on the Audigy drivers. Granted, the sound isn't as good as it was in XP, but it is still brilliant. My main problem is with Winamp - it seems to crash. But WMP11 is so nice, I might just use it. Although I'll look for a fix and will no doubt find it.

Battlefield 2142 loads fine, I haven't actually played in-game yet but I was able to check all my awards and unlocks etc.

Motion backgrounds are the best. I thought they would be a distraction, but the default is just an ever so slightly swaying Vista, and it is very nice. Everything is so clean and well-prepared, I was very happy with it! I'll just leave you with some screenshots to see how nice it really is :

So, what do I say? GET VISTA ULTIMATE! (Or basic.. LOL)

There are many fine new features in Vista but not worth scrapping XP and dropping 250 bucks..."yet". Let all the eager guys drop the dough at first. There is bound to be some issues with security as there always is with a new OS. I have it installed on a separate partition and on a new laptop. I am not prepared to put my gaming machine on it though. Being some of the first to run a new OS is like diving in to a shallow swimming pool. The appearance of vista can easily be duplicated also . I myself am waiting for them to get everything worked out with the 64 bit version.

Ditto, plus the performance drop.

Most computers now are coming with Vista,i looked at the Pc world website and alot were Vista.

So if i'm not supposed to get Vista this early looks like i may as well wait it out with this thing i've got.

I think your experience with this new OS is what most people have, it's just that in most reviews, most of the OS's drawbacks are discussed and it's benefits are often overshadowed. From what I have seen, I would like Vista, but I would HAVE to get ultimate and the price is just not worth it. Besides that, our admins aren't letting us upgrade.

I just had a great round of 2142. No flaws in game either.

I'm in the middle of testing Home Premium 64-Bit. Its pretty cool, games run piece of piss (BF2, Supreme Commander... Purble Place).

A note though: If you want to play games, you NEED 1GB, where on XP you'd get away with 512. It still runs the same as XP with 1GB, though.

Funny... I received Vista Business on DVD for free...

MSDNAA through my College of Engineering. Love how that is

Btw to the OP.. your review is spot on. I love the new features. My PC is turning more and more into a work platform as I progress through college than a gaming platform, so performance drops don't really concern me. I have my Xbox 360 for gaming now.

Still debating whether I want to activate my copy or save it for a new comp. They did give me 2 serials though... so I might waste one.

Visually pleasing. XP drivers seem to work fine. WMP11 is sexy, as is Firefox with a Vista theme on here. The "Show active panels" button is killer, as is the fluid motion of opening and closing stuff. The transparency is a nice touch as well. The intro screen is more polished, and the login is appealing to the eye.

The file structure is definately different than previous versions. Personally I like it better, as well as the start menu, which is less cluttered.

ETA:: The included backgrounds have to be some of the nicest I've ever seen included on an OS.

When you spend 35 hours a week doing programming or circuit design on a comp, having it appealing to the eye is very comforting.

Not exactly the world's shiniest review for what is supposed to be a revolution in OS's. Vista is a bundle of flaws and authoritarian restrictions that need to be ironed out before I'll consider.

Take note that I never said there were any. I just said they don't concern me.

The OS runs smoothly and I have an AMD XP Barton 2800+, 2 gigs of DDR PC3200, and an AGP 7800GS.

My weakest link by far is my CPU, and as I said. It runs smoothly.
