Hi everyone,

I'm just about to finish putting together my new rig (this weekend it should be together) and I am wondering about what OS to run. I've always gone with Windows XP 32 bit since it came out, although now I am probably going to move to the 64 bit edition to go with my new 64 bit CPU. A mate of mine who works in a PC shop has offered to hook me up with the x64 upgrade at an el cheapo price which is good. Vista is out of the question due to it's ridiculously high price tag and that it's still pretty new.

What I'm hoping I can get from the bf2s community is a bit of feedback from people who have had experience running this OS. I've heard that there can be some compatiblity issues with 32 bit programs and that you need 64 drivers, if this is true, where can I get 64 bit drivers? What compatiblity issues are there? Is there a significant performance issue or decrease?

Please post here with some feedback for me, as I'd like to get some advice from people who have ran this OS before and know it's ins and outs.

most of the companys that make the products and supply drivers will have some sort of 64bit drivers to go with them, although i would check all of your stuff before you move to it just to be sure...

well when i went from 32 to 64, i got quite a jump in performance boost :\

but like i said, you should check all of your hardware over first (google is your friend) to see if its all compatible...

really? funny since ive had less problems with 64 bit in over a year then i had with 32 on a weekly basis :\  hmm strange things computers are

yeah, most people that bitch about x64 tried it or heard about it being shit like a year ago... its better now. Ain't great but if you fit into the category of all your shit working you'll be fine with it. Wouldn't hurt to try it.

I concur with this. x64 was a P.O.C on my machine (not a bad rig, either). The biggest problem with x64 was a near complete lack of drivers for cutting edge components, drivers that didn't work, or software that ended up having to be run in 32bit mode anyway for no gain at all.

Stick to 32bit until you move to vista at which point the system and everything will be geared for x64 much better.

There is hardly any boost at all.

You only need it if you need more than 4Gb of RAM, which you dont.

what will x64 do for you that x32 cant? I bet you dont have anything that will benefit from it.

stick with x32 unless you have an application that absolutely requires gigaquads of ram.  x64 is not ready for prime time yet but youll hear about it when it is (or, more to the point, when Intel gets on the x64 race - word on the steet is that microslop held back on pushing vista x64 as the os to have thanks to intel)
