I was at my Aunt and unlces at the weekend and they had an issue with the old computer which used to be mine which I gave them, as they really only wanted something to browse the web.  I had my share of issues with the machine but it could do what they asked easily enough, but when I checked the task manager I saw this:

60 processes :S  Isnt that a bit.......MUCH?  I mean, from what I know you should never really have more than 30 running but this has double that!  Also, I dont really know what most of them are, few are easy enough like ATI TOOL up top and msn, AOL etc but what the hell is CLI.exe!!!???  and the bloody rest of them?

Or better, how would I go about identifying what each of them are?

Lastly, why does iexplorer.exe show up multipletimes in the processes (theres like five of them)?

Well, there's your reason for why it's running so slowly: AOL.

Still i can get on the internet and it's fine.

I have 70 processes running at the moment on a crappy computer with no problems. I'm inclined to think it's a specific process that's eating up everything.

Run virus scanners
Spybot search and destroy
Adaware SE
Avast antivirus

The multiple instances of iexplore lead me to believe that you may have a virus.

Ok guys. If you have to many processes just google one at a time to find out what they 're there for. And run a virusprogram too.

You can Google most of the processes and find out what they are... my new PC has 52 running, and that's with no applications open.

At the run menu in start button put msconfig and then go to the start up tab, deselect some unwanted processes and restart. You´ll see some improvements .

P.S. BTW, remove any unused programs also from your control panel.

Just google each process name and find out what it is, and if you don't need it then prevent it from starting up

wow. You guys have alot of processes compared to me. I only have 35.  Most are for a network setup.

Go through your startup and services under msconfig.  This is where most of that sh!t stems from.

Here is a link for startup programs.

And here is a services site

I keep mine lower than 40 at all times, try running MSCONFIG and editing what starts up for windows that will make things run alot better.

I have 24 processes running.

I end the ones I feel I don't need, such as Ipodservice.exe, ituneshelper.exe and so on.

run msconfig and  go to startup and disable all, you don't need anything critical that's is starting up there, and stuff that is critical will start up anyway

Start > Run > msconfig

Click the "Start Up Tab"

there will be the list

click off the things that re not needed

i.e MSN, ATITool ect

stuff you dont know what does also turn it off

then restart the comp

then type Start > Run > regedit

then go to HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Shared Tools > MSConfig > StartUp Reg

there will be a list of the keys you disabled

click on the key you want and it will tell you what does what and where its stored

so for example if there is one that is a sytem32 app it means its something that windows is using

if there is a program files one it means its a program on start up

best delete the ones that do nothing i.e msn on start up, scanners ect

do that and your comp shud be running alot better and smoother

CLI = Command Line Interface

THat has something to do with Catalyst Control center.  There's about 3 of them every time you start up.  Maybe the rest is spyware brought on by AOL or any Google products that might have been installed on the computer.

Here's a good listing of Windows processes:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/win … sslibrary/

Between that and Black Viper's process guide I'm around 30 processes at startup.
