You should OC GPUs. It makes a big difference.

but overclocking the GPU would kill the warranty right? also causing overheating then problems ect.

i dont think id gain anything else from overclocking a x1950XT

could i?

Unless you install the CCC you will need to install a 3rd party app that will enable the 2D/3D clock changes.  The card has different 2D and 3D clock speeds.  The poller service that changes the speeds is part of the CCC, not the driver, so without the CCC you card would stay clocked at 2D speeds the whole time.

The only way overclocking would violate the warranty is if you flash the BIOS to default to the overclocked speeds or foolishly tell them you overclocked it. Otherwise there's no way for them to tell.

I actually installed the CCC to make sure the poller service was running, to change the clock speeds, and then use ATi Tray Tools to make game profiles, adjust fan speeds, etc.

The nice thing about ATi Tray Tools is that it allows command line parameters.  With the CCC you can only make game profiles if you only need to point directly at the .EXE file.  If there are any other command line parameters, you're screwed.  This is a really big problem for anything that uses Steam because all the programs point to STEAM.EXE, then use a three digit number to indicate which game you want to have launched.

It really isn't that much trouble because I don't really have to do anything in the CCC except set my 3D o/c speeds.  After that I control everything within ATi Tray Tools.

I've been running Omega drivers with ATI tray tools since back in the days of my ATI 8500 DV.  The CCC is pure bloat and completely unnecessary.  For those who insist on running the official drivers  though, Koroush has posted a VERY thorough guide at www.tweakguides.com.

Catalyst Tweak Guide: http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html

Edit:  Guess as long as I am pimping Tweakguides, I should also mention the Tweakguides Tweaking Companion, it's the mother of all Windows XP/System guides in a very handy PDF format.  Highly recommended reading.
