&*%$! Ever tried to hover a helicopter?

So, I got my first attempt to hover in a MD-500 helicopter the other day......holy shit at first I was convinced it was impossible. I have 200 hours flying fixed wing, along with a multi-engine rating and it didn't matter. In fact, a couple of times I almost crapped my pants cause we were all over the place. I would compare it to trying to balance a tiger with rabies on a stick placed in it's ass. I have since gotten much better, but I was wondering if there are any rotorcraft pilots here with similar stories.

I've never been behind the controls of a real helo, but I have a cousin who took a Huey for a spin. He said it was the toughest thing he's done in a while.

Also, trying to hover a helicopter with no fly-by-wire or autopilot is widely regarded as one of the most difficult things you can actually do.

My dad has thousands of hours in the Apache Longbow, he flies Hueys for fun at his work lol, he could do it no sweat probably. I imagine it would be hard though because of all the balancing.

It's not too bad once you get used to it. The problem is, evertime you do something, you have to do something else. Like, if you pull up on the collective to climb it adds torque which makes the nose go to the right, so you have to put in left pedal to stop it at the same time. Lot of fun though. Beats the crap out of flying an airplane.

Don't get me wrong, I love flying airplanes. But the helicopter is much more fun.

From what I've heard from an army pilot about to take me up in a Black Hawk, Flying a helicopter is like trying to ride a skateboard while balancing a bowling ball on a broom stick. Then we went up and it was cool.

I love'd the DC helos. Because of the learning curve, no one would hop in them, leaving them to the experienced pilots. I worked magic with the Blackhawk on Lost Village No Parachutes in that game.
