I've seen someone talk about a 128, and a 256 player server. Though it would seem that the connection as well as the server would need to be quite beefy. A lot of users also didn't think that 256 would be possible...

I don't have the resources where I work now to test this, but maybe if BF2 was run on a Linux cluster. There are many Linux LIVE Cluster CDs (http://www.knoppix.net/wiki/Cluster_Live_CD), and if you work at a college etc, with access to many computers, it sounds like setting up a cluster with Live CDs is easy, then maybe running 256 player servers wouldn't be impossible?

!!! This is just a theory.... You would still need a good connection or several.

I personally don't think the PC at home could handle it. It's not that the cluster would handle that many players but the home PC trying to render that many polygons and doing the physics would probably melt itself.

Yeah, I agree. 64 is too laggy for me even though I still get high FPS and I have a good PC.

The BF2 engine and network code is too inefficent to handle so many players.

I didn't even think of that.... which is a major issue of course.

I'm running an AMD 3800+, 1GB (2.2.2.5 DDR 400) RAM, WD Raptor 10K drive, ATI X800LX on a Asus A8N-E, and BF is running ok on a few 64 player maps. I will upgrade to 2GB of RAM so that I can remove the pagefile, that way BF will run... well, load a little faster.

I wonder if they change their engine to something more like those massive multiplayer games, where there are several thousand players... but then again, that might not work, as I've never seen a *fast* massive multiplayer game... everything is your turn, my turn, your turn etc. Which would be REAL fun in BF.. bang... bang....

I'm sure that they will figure out something one of these days. Not sure if anyone ever played FarCry, but that game has an awesome graphics engine.

anyway... back to work...  :-)
