Why? In short, EA has lived up to their reputation of release complete SHIT patches.  Patch one problem and a new one pops up.  This one is the best of them all....

-90% of the time the UAV drone does not deploy after repeated clicks!
-the game routinely freezes during the "respawn" screen

Although what you've just describes is exactly what you experience if your settings are too high.

I've had no problem with the patch either.

Since that makes seven people with no problems...and one person with a problem, I'm going to close this thread.
