ok well i had an accident a while ago, where i tripped on my headset wire while it was plugged into the only headphone jack on my computer, and the piece broke off inside the jack. so that meant the my computer still thought that  there was headphones in, so i had no sound in my speakers . i thought i was SCREWED but then i used a knife and basically ruined the headphone jack but got it so i have sound in one speaker, which im ok with, cause i usually just use my headphones. so i bought a USB headset, but that broke after a while, and now my cousin just gave he his normal 3.5mm headset.


SOOOO basically here is my question:
can i buy some kind of converter that plugs into a USB port and lets me plug a normal 3.5mm jack into it? i found some stuff that i think will work, but im not sure if this is what they do. so can u guys help me?

i was looking at stuff online, and like this:

the only thing about this is that idk if i can use the mic on my headset, but i dont really care about that

so do u guys know if i buy this, and plug it into my computer and then headset, if the headset will work fine? if not, could u guys suggest another product? (if so, could it please be from bestbuy, amazon or newegg? i just got tons of gift certificutes there )

No, that doodad will not work. I don't think. From the look of it that just allows you to output 5.1 surround audio to a 5.1 speaker set-up - I doesn't appear to have a mic input - which is what you need...

well im pretty sure that they both use 3.5mm, the headset and the jack for speakers.


yea i just checked and i 99% sure they r the same type of jack

Yes, they're the same type of jack, but you need a mic input where as that doodad only has outputs.

try searching for "3.5mm to USB"...

so do u mean that the headset jack wouldnt fit into the hole? or if it fits, whould there just be no sound? caues i think they use the same jack, and it if it would make the speakers work if i plugged those into it, i dont see why it wouldnt work if i plugged the headset into it...
idk maybe im missing something

IT HAS ONE HOLE. TO HAVE MIC AND SPEAKER, YOU NEED TWO.

THAT SOB WILL GIVE YOU SOUND, BUT NO VOICE. IT HAS ONE OUTPUT JACK. NO INPUT, OR "MIC."

actually tho, u answered my question better than that other guy lol

i dont really care if the microphone itself actually works, just as long as the headphone part of the headset works.  sorry if i wasnt very clear on that, probably cause i called the whole headset unit a "mic"  sorry about the confusion

If the headphone and mic jacks were on the front of your computer, you still may have jacks on your sound card as well.

Spend the $70 and get a set of Turtle Beach 5.1 surround headphones.

The thing I linked to will work - you just need to find somewhere that stocks it...

'Outputs' send signals out - i.e. speaker connections are outputs.
'Inputs' take signals in. - i.e. microphone connections are inputs.

MIC-------->[input]            [output]-------->SPEAKER

See?

yea, i still do, but iv only tried to plug headphones into them once, and it didnt work then. hummmm... maybe if i plugged them in then restarted my computer....hummmi think il try that


no, that kinda worked, but its the same as the speakers : i can only hear in the right ear. its cause a piece of the broken headset jack ist still stuck inside the messed up hole, so the computer still thinks that a headset is plugged in. its like if u r listening to music from an ipod and u slowly pull out the headphone jack, the sound goes out in one ear then the other. since i pushed around the broken piece a bit, i can now hear it in one ear, but not the other. but usb headsets work fine, so that y i ithnk getting a 3.5mm usb adapter will work fine

ha its cool. i find that rudeness sometimes help pound the message across. thats generally the only time i actually AM rude.


another thing to do is this: if you're comfortable with opening up your computer, do so. you should see a few cords coming from the absolute front of the box, ending in small rectangular boxes (where they connect to the motherboard). in mine, they're grey-colored. i don't know what they will be for you.

on the motherboard, right above where they connect, you should see writing, usually in white.

one will say "usb_XX" and the other "Frt_Audio" or some variant. disconnect the front audio one.

this will disconnect the front audio ports (obviously) and fully enable the rear ones.
