When I first heard that 2142 was coming out I distinctly remember DICE mentioning that the new battlefield would be more destructible, but there isnt one thing I can find that you can destroy on the battlefield for a strategical advantage. Especially the fact that you cant blow up and repair bridges like you could in Battlefield 2, that added a twist to the battle. I would like to see the bridges in sidi power plant or suez to be destroyed and watch what would happen. Anyone else notice this?

edit/ and of course all the basics like ground defense etc.

Yea I agree 100%.  I think they pulled a typical DICE and left out a lot of stuff that was originally told.  Like the working toilets.  Yes, in one of the first releases they said that BF2142 would have usable toilets.  Are they there?  No.  Do I care?  Kinda.  The point is that they left out numerous things that should have and were expected to be added.  I truly doubt that even if we started a petition that it would get anywhere.

Can't blow up bridges, oh well.  Twist to the battle? Sure, but not a very big one with hover tanks that wouldn't be restricted at all by a missing bridge.

very very very very very VERY true, i used to love blowing up the bridge on Karkand, and the SF maps, imagine sticking rdx on the bridge at Suez, and being able to blow up the massive towers also in Suez... yer another lie in the long and probably endless list

Interesting point, the game is actually less destructible.

Perhaps they mean it in the sense that there are way more vehicles to blow up.

If you ever played Red Faction on the PC, ages old now, that had mostly destructable enviroments, and it worked like a charm. Want a nice sniper hole/shooting perch, simple, blow yourself a cave, and sit in it. Really devious people would dig tunnels across the map, on things like CTF. Loved it

Really?  Then it's even more impressive that I can drive it down a cliff on Shuhia Taiba and still have 100 hp afterward.

Sure its fun but when you have lots of beginners who wanna test what the engine goes for you will see very little things standing. Not to talk about people missing with the tank a lot and leave you on a standing pillar.

Yes I did play it but that game had a limit on how much you could destroy, had it charm. But didn't really buy it then.

Red Faction anyone? That had destructible surroundings in its GeoMod engine in 2001 (it also featured a system that detected where an enemy was hit, and made him limp when he was hit in the leg. disarming by shooting a hand was also an option (not when you used a rocket-launcher i discovered)).

I don't mind DICE leaving destructable surroundings out, only if they where open about it. But it's sad to see that destruction of bridges is history.

For those interested in new engines and character behaviour i found two nice vids about a Star Wars engine.

I find it somewhat disappointing that they left out destructable bridges. I mean, c'mon! It's PRE-WRITTEN CODE!
Being that 2142 and bf2 use an EXTREMELY similar engine, there would be minimal/no required changes to the bridge code to make them destructible.

Someday, games will be so realistic that full detailed buildings full of furniture, paintings and tons of other crap can be completely blown to hell with water leaking and it breaks different every single time.

Oh man! I remember having SO much fun in Red Faction. It was probably the most-played multi-player FPS game for me aside from Counter-Strike (and now, the last two Battlefield games).

I absolutely adored CTF in Red Faction just because of the clever tactics involving det-packs.

Unfortunately, cheating killed it, didn't it? I remember it was extremely easy for jerkfaces to cheat in that just by playing online with some mods enabled... heh. The game was totally not designed with cheaters in mind.
People with rapid-fire rocket launchers (and near-unlimited ammo) that flew around in the air at astonishing speeds... (just like no-clipping) it was hilarious and awful at the same time. For one, they couldn't aim properly.

The hilarious part was purely due to the fact that once you did shoot one of them down, their corpse fell down at normal speed game and made a very satisfying and comical splat.

I'll never know just why people cheated so often in it, but I do know it was still a damn fun game. The sequel just wasn't the same to me, though.

Think Playstation man, blow shit up!

Karma to whoever names the movie that quote came from.  So yeah, destructive environments aren't easy, it requires a ton of CPU processing I'm guessing.  This might be the time where those Aegia Phys-X cards are going to come in handy (it's still pretty far from mainstream), and it might be interesting to see what developers do in regards to demands for more realistic damage to the landscape.
