These 2.1 Energy Star company speakers I found in my garage are just horrible.  I need new speakers.  My X-Fi could do so much better with better speakers.  I would prefer some digital speakers since the current ones are analog and I want to see what digital is like.  I don't want 5.1 because I don't have any room behind me to put the speakers.  I don't want 7.1 because it is too damn expensive.  Maybe 4 speakers at most unless someone proves me wrong about needing to put 2 5.1 speakers behind me.

Edit: For clarification, I am NOT talking about the optical port (I don't have/need one), i'm talking about the circular digital port that is the same size as the analog port.  Also, please try to keep this under 50$.

you can still buy 5.1s and run them as 2.1. I just as not to limit your selection, as the better features will probably be in 5.1s. Personally I recommend anything creative. I have their standard 5.1s running as 2.1 (using the 3 separate input plugs). I bought as set of bose (w/o sub), and they did not even compare. Caveat: I'm not a big speaker user, mostly headphones.

Why would there be more features in a 5.1 set?

Logitech makes good sets. If I was shopping for a 2.1 system I'd probably get these:

Logitech X-230

But I just bought the Z-5300e's, so woo-hoo for me.

Do those work in the Digital port?  (Just to clarify, I do not mean Optical out, the X-Fi does not have that)

Nope, they're analog input only.

You are wasting money connecting the optical out.  Just buy you some decent speakers and be done with it.  You will have to get a speaker system with a decoder if you do what you are planning.

As far as 5.1.. wow.. I even bought 5.1 headphones.  You can hear people walking up behind you and can hear almost exactly where those sniper shots are coming from.

Altec Lansing speakers and headset sound great for me.  Speakers are 4 years old and still work great.

The headset is a AHS502i http://www.altecmm.com/product_details_ … mp;region=

Speakers are older versions of this:
