Hey tech,

my 4th system needs upgrade concerning the GPU. It has to be an AGP8x.

Specs:
Gigabyte Nforce3 ultra S. 939
AMD 64 3200+ (winchester)
Corsair TwinMx 2048MB
Geforce 5950ULTRA 256MB

the good old 5950 has enough power for the BF series, but nowadays I play ArmA alot and thats a noo go with this cards. So I need to change it after five years

Ass you might know Im THE Nvidia fanboy, but atm ATI has some nice AGP X1950PRO cards outta there.

These are my candidates so far:

Nvidia 7800GS Gainward Golden sample goes like hell
ATI Radeon 1950PRO Saphire
taken from alternate.de, german hardware store

As I already have a 7800GS 256MB in my 3rd system I say this card is pretty ok, but latley I´ve seen some reviews about those X1950PRO that have changed my mind, a little.

What would you say? Are those ATI´s worth a try? Any other suggestions???

Reminder: spare me with ugrade your RAM, upgrade your MoBo, upgrade this and that stuff please, look for my other rigs than tell me something about high end, kthx

I don't know about you, but I'm just waiting for the 8600 Ultras to come out.  It's only going to be $179, which is 136.056 Euros.

The 8600 series should be released in another month or so, but I cant find anything to confirm an AGP version.

Oh, AGP, sorry.  I have a 7600GS right now, but it's finicky.  For instance, I used to play FEAR really nicely, at at least 30 FPS.  Now, when I try it I get <15 FPS.  Unplayable.

In Battlefield 2, I get >50 FPS on High settings at 1280x1024, no AA.  In 2142 Titan mode with 48 players, (and me in the Titan vents) I get ~25 FPS.

The 7600GS is a weird card.  I think the 7800GS will serve you well though.

(btw, the 8600 Ultra is a mid-range DX10 card with about the same power as a 7900GS (I can't remember exactly which card but I think that was it.))

The X1950 Pro is a bit quicker all round than the 7800GS. Since the price difference is only 3 Euros, I'd definately go for that.

If you absolutely need the card in AGP, then I would also say the X1950 Pro.  I really think you are going to be hard pressed to get DX10 cards in AGP, and even if they do come, they usually come last to market.  That could leave you waiting for several months.

X800GTO.

I seriously doubt DX10 cards will ever come out for AGP. AGP doesn't have near enough bandwidth to run those cards.

I just bought an ATI x1300pro for about $100 US. I have about the same system specs as you, but I have a P4 2.6GHz with 2 gigs of RAM (same as you). I can run everything on medium quite happily. If I crank it up to high, it still works but the FPS sucks.

I like my X1650PRO

It still lags though, I think that's because either my network is fucked up or I accidentally fried my RAM.

The X1300 is about on-par with the old 9600's, which blow. lol

I got my Radeon 9600 up to medium settings, high textures, 1024x768@60Hz, no AA.  Did that without overclocking and it had framerates at around 40 to 50 before my comp started to crap out on me.

When it comes to GPU i find it easier to stick eith what you know in terms of reliability. If you know Nvidea are reliable stick with them.

Why do you have/require 4 PCs?

Seriously? To enlarge my epen0r No, I really dont have any usefull answers here. I was in this upgrading stuff the last year, but instead of upgrading my two old rigs, I´ve bought so much stuff that building new systems was more interesting So I have two rigs at my appartment, and two at my girls house. Yeah, I know, it´s a waste of money, but hey...

My last several cards have been ATi, and I've not had a single problem.  Just make sure you use driver cleaner, or similar utility, to remove the old NV drivers.  Failure to do this will likely result in pulling out your hair, getting drunk, and calling your computer nasty names.
