My general setup is as follows:

3.6 GHz
ATI X300 256MB
OS XP

I have more than enough Ram and video card to run this game, one of my problems is that while in game sometimes I get "there is a problem with your connection" sometimes it can get pretty bad. When it is in this mode I can look around but can't move, fire, or enter vehicles etc...

My second problem is, I can't get into some servers because I have a high average ping of 218. Now to fill you in, I do not have alot of time on a online game infact BF2 is my first. The "ping" they refere to is the time it takes for your signal to get back to the server from what I understand. I have very high speed DSL with networking. My question would be is there something in my setup options that I can change to calm this studdering problem and let me onto some of these low ping servers???

I would appreciate any help you might be able to give my in this matter.

     Thx in advance: EVIL_STYX

Whoops,
Also, I have a problem with when it's loading a new map. It's finish's the load process and I get into the game and most the other players have been playing long enough to take, lose, and retake flags. My wait time is alot longer than most and I personally think it has something to do with this connection problem I have.

     Again Thx in advance: EVIL_STYX

load time is due to lack of ram, i dont recomend playing this game with under 1.5 gig of ram,

the "problem with your connection" is nothing but a pain in the ass, i get it all the time too and not much can be done about it.

as for your ping, in the server list look for servers with ping below 200 and that should fix that.

I load fast enough that i have to wait for the 15 second cooldown to finish. But i have 4 gigs of ram and a raid 0 10000 rpm setup.

To fix your problems id recommend, as styx said, more RAM. you might also try defragmenting your hard drive if you havent done that in a while. you should also close everything you dont need running in the backround. Or you can stop them from starting at all using the msconfig utility. heres a nice guide on using msconfig: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
Look for anything you recognize but dont need to be running all the time in the startup tab, and uncheck them. Be careful about what you get rid of, because some things are actually important.
Leave the services tab alone, unless you know what youre doing.

Another thing you might try: after opening up battlefield 2, alt tab out and open the task manager (ctrl+alt+delete), go to the processes tab and right click on bf2.exe, and move its priority to "high". This might help a bit, but only if your cpu is being taxed by other things while you are playing bf2.
You can also use the processes tab to close things you dont want running. but again, there are plenty of things in the processes tab that you really, really want to continue running. I wouldnt recommend closing explorer.exe, for example.

hope this helps

Edit: your high ping problem could be a few things:
a firewall (i doubt it, because a firewall would likely stop you altogether and not just slow you down). If you have some kind of firewall software you might try stopping it before playing bf2. If you have windows xp the windows firewall should be running unless you turned it off manually.
turn off anything else that uses your internet connection before playing bf2. especially things that use your uploading bandwidth.
The battlefield 2 server browser is also a stinking piece of horse *($#, and the pings reported next to servers are wildly inaccurate at times. I find that single clicking a server will ping it and give you a relatively safe ping estimation.

Thx for the quick response guy's, I do shut all backround programs down before I play, I also shut down my anti spyware and all my security programs. If you get that same silly message about your connection, I feel alot better about that. I have not tried to make BF2 high priority, I will give that a try. As far as the ping under 200 servers, I run about 76 on those servers, but what I dont get is that when I go on a low ping server thats when it jumps up to 218 on average.

Thank you for your input and quick response, I really do appreciate it!

not to tick you off, but i have a very slow DSL connex... and the ping is always good...
increasing ram should solve a lot of your probs, but the ping issue is something else.
some one else using the dsl connex in your home?

Yes there is another computer on the net in my home, here is the skinny on that though, I can have them both running the Demo of BF2 and they both get kicked for high ping on low ping servers, which no matter if its one computer or both the ping is still 218 average on both machines. Even if one is completely shut down or both running it has no change.

Just something I do on a regular basis, apart from defrag. I'm also on a network and every so often I get the 'problem with your connection' message. When it really starts to bug me, I restart the router.... that's reset but not to factory default.... and it does work for about a week or so.

As for map loading times and getting into games. I don't have a problem, I'm usually one of the first into a new map and have captured a flag before others have joined...... ram ram ram... although I note you say you have '3.6 gigs', that wouldn't be GHz by any chance ... If you're looking at ram, BF2 needs lots of it and since I upgraded to 2 GB of RAM, I've had no problems

Sorry for the mess up, yes it is a 3.6 GHz P4 with 2 GB of Ram. How ever when I look at what it actually is putting out or capable of it's about 1.4 DDR for some reason?

At any rate, Thx for all the help and I will be looking to see if anyone has added anything new.

See Y'all on the Battle Field!!

I'm not trying to teach you how to suck eggs here (UK expression) . Click Start > right click 'my computer' > click properties. What is it reporting on the ram?
I only ask because a while ago, my ram only reported 1.4 of the 2gigs and was only using that much, so I had a few problems. All I did was change the data via BIOS and no problems since. However, some report lower than expected but because of the speed, is actually using it all (recent thread can't remember where).

Hope someone can help you better

Well nitro I'm really impressed that you know how to spell the word crap that takes alot of talent "man" and if you really must know I am married with three children and a mortgage you fruit lope, I dont have the money or the time to build this fire breathing arss kicker. In fact I dont think in this post I ever made mention of me having the best machine out there. By the way the X300 does just fine on BF2!

Back to the topic, Thank you Thinner for your helpful input. Once I have the time will try two things, first is making BF2 program priority in propertys, second is as mentioned above I am missing .6 gigs of my 2 gigs of ram it's being used some where else, thanks to your direction I now have a place to see where it is going and maybe even better get it back where it belongs.

Thanks again everyone that has taken time out to piont me in the right direction!
