We need way more information than that. Intel or AMD, how many pcix16 slots, how much supported RAM, pc or server, come on.

For what CPU?

I'd say the best overall is the Asus Striker Extreme 680i board. But it's not that simple.

What features do you need the board to have?

Virtually all boards support 4GB of RAM and there are A LOT of C2D compatible 775 boards out there with 16x PCIe slots. Will you be running SLI? Will you be using onboard audio or a sound card? Will you be overclocking? The list goes on and on.

OKay, no I wont be running sli. I want a soundcard, and no overclocking.

OK. In that case I'd go with an Intel 975X chipset from a decent manufacturer like Asus or Intel.

Is that because he wants a sound card? I'm getting a MSI 975X Platinum Powerup Edition, it has onboard sound and also supports SLI (but only in 8x mode) and OCing.

After I ordered it I found out it got the Tom's Hardware editors choise award (not that I know what that means, but it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling inside).

It's very difficult to choose the right motherboard since there are so many options. I don't know if the one I chose would be considered the "very best", but it will do everything I need it to do (and do it well hopefully). It's a bit pricey though.

There is no single "very best motherboard" but for extreme gaming, something using the 680i chipset will set you on the right path.

No, very little to do with soundcard. That's really the least relevant bit of info, I just wanted to know if he'd be interested in something with fancier onboard sound (like the Asus Striker Extreme 680i board which has DTS connect on it - DTS FTW).

MSI boards always seem to perform well, but I've had too many issues with MSI stuff breaking to be recommending it to anyone.

you can build this thingy cheaper if you buy the whole hardware by yourself!

The bfg board isnt the best choice imo, I would suggest an Asus board.

Looks fine. Maybe you could get a 6600 instead and focus on getting slightly better components to complement it - OCing performance is very simillar anyway.

That was a poor decision.
