I say this because I am at high school in Norway now. And to be frank, junior high in Norway is a waste of time (if it weren't for the math and Norwegian literary history you learn, that's the only thing you need later). Once you get to high school things will improve much. It might even go too fast for you. Why? Exams...

And think how privileged you are over these Americans or Englishmen, or whatever; it's harder to get a 6 than to get an A .

Seriously though, things will be very different on high school. Junior high is just a playground for children. High school is school.

When trying to join a High-School, you would normally just send in your grades and let those with the best grades join. The problem with this, according to the stupid government, is that some students will have a long distance to travel to get to the school they want.

You see, Oslo is divided into two parts: The East side and the West side. The East side is the "poor" side, mostly occupied by foreigners (mostly from Pakistan, Poland, Somalia and Iraq), while the West side is the "Rich" side.

The Government decided to divide the High Schools into Zones. A percentage of the students in the school have to be from inside their "Zone", while the rest have to come from outside the zone (I believe it is 25% from outside, 75% from inside). The point of this is to make it easier for those inside the zone to get in to a school near them. But here comes the problem - 9 out of the 10 best schools in Norway are on the west side, one of the best is on the East side. This never had a chance at working out, and here are 2 examples:

Oslo Handelsgymnasium
This was one of the best schools in Norway, before the stupid new arrangement. The only problem is that it is on the East side of town. Those from the East are normally way behind in school because of their foreign background, bad childhood etc etc. 75% of the students have to come from the east side. Therefore, those from the East need a D-average, while those from the west (where I live) need an A-average.

Sooo.... You can be talking about how the Soviet Union handled the Cuban Crisis, while 75% of the class don't know what the Soviet Union was. Good Fucking Game. This School has gone from top 5, to one of the average "OK" schools in 2 years.

Persbråten VGS
This is a whole different story. Persbråten is a top 10 school on the West Side. The problem here is that a lot of people from the West side of town want to go there, and almost nobody from the East side want to. Therefore, even with the 25/75% thing, it is easier to get into this school from the outside than from the inside.

So... The plan fails... Big Time. The Private schools are a joke - Pay money and you get good grades. The school system sucks ass, as we waste time learning how to send pictures on our mobile phones using blue-tooth, even though we are still on graphs (I'm turning 16 in November, that's 10th grade in Norway)!

I can't wait 'till I'm 18 and can move to the US or England and attend college.

Just hope they sort this crap out before my 12 year old shall attend high school.

Besides what you tell here the entire school system is undergoing a major reorganizing again, like the ones in 94 and 97 wasn`t enough.

@Coolbeano: Teachers in Norway can strike and they have done it on a couple of occasions ....
