St David's Day is celebrated in Wales on 1 March, in honour of Dewi Sant or St David, the patron saint of Wales. Little is known about him for certain. What little information we have is based on an account of his life written by Rhigyfarch towards the end of the 11th century.

According to this Latin manuscript, Dewi died in the year 589. His mother was called Non, and his father, Sant, was the son of Ceredig, King of Ceredigion. After being educated in Cardiganshire, he went on pilgrimage through south Wales and the west of England, where it is said that he founded religious centres such as Glastonbury and Croyland. He even went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, where he was made archbishop.

Now March 1 is celebrated by schools and cultural societies throughout Wales. It is the custom on that day to wear either a leek or a daffodil - two of our national emblems - and for young girls to wear the national costume.

Little wonder they look nervous, poor things.

So reading the above tells me if it wasn't for us Welsh them hippies who go to Glastonbury wouldn't have an annual music and drug festival.

Many miracles have been attributed to him, the most incredible of which was performed when he was preaching at the Synod of Llanddewibrefi - he caused the ground to rise underneath him so that he could be seen and heard by all.  Many hippies have said the same happens annualy at Glastonbury, miracle my ass that'll be the "Sniffy Sniffy" there sticking up their noses.  "Llanddewibrefi " - isn't that the village where Gay Dafyffd off Little Britian comes from?

My Daughter has worn her costume to school today, bloody rip off it cost me £10 and if she's grown out of it by next year I will be most pissed off at having to fork out another £10.  When I was a lad they used to give us the afternoon off school not anymore, tight barstards.

We are men't to eat Welsh Cakes today.

But I'm not instead I will be having Chicken Tikka Massala

So Happy St Davids day to all, wether your Welsh like me or wether your not, wether your interested in this or wether your not.

St Davids flag can be seen in my sig (the badge bit)

Whuppity Scoorie Day

March 1st is “Whuppity Scoorie“. What is “Whuppity Scoorie“? Well it is when all the children gather around St. Nicholas Church in Lanark, Scotland and take part in a tradition/festival that is believed in ancient times to mark the approach of spring. On March 1st, at 6:00 pm the children gather around St. Nicholas Church and when the “wee bell” is rung the children begin to race around the church (counter clockwise) three times, making noise and swinging a ball of paper tied to a string above their heads as they go. This may account for the word “whuppity” possibly meaning “whipping” as in “whipping the ball above their heads”. At the end of their three laps, coins are tossed by adults and the children scramble to gather as many as possible.

The origins of “Whuppity Scoorie” are unknown, but one belief is that it marks the rites or approach of spring. Others believe it was started to mark the change in time, when the days got longer and the curfew was lifted or modified to allow the children to stay out later and play longer. They believe that the end of the long winter days was marked the joyful celebration of children running round the Kirk yard. Others believe that it was to chase away the devil or evil spirits who live in the darkness of winter before the days of spring or the celebration of Easter. This would account for the noise made by the children and the swinging of the tethered paper balls. Lastly there are those that believe that it was brought about during a period when “miscreants were whipped round the town cross" then “scoored” (scoured or cleansed)” in the nearby river Clyde. There are other scenarios and theories for this tradition, but since the truth about where it comes from seems lost with time, each person is left to decide what they believe is its origin.

Nowadays there is a festival in the Royal Burgh of Lanark marking the day. The Community Council encourages community participation and the Burgh even hosts the “Whuppity Scoorie Storytelling Festival”. Whatever the reason for the festival, it is met with joyful noise and excitement by the youngsters involved and the parents and townspeople that participate in the yearly event.

A bit like when Cardiff play Swansea at football.  We chuck coins at the Gypo's and they pick them up, put them in their pockets and carry on playing.
