Its used to determine the rest of your life. Seriously.

I get to miss out on almost all of the Colleges/Universities I wanted to go to, just because I have a 3.6, opposed to the 4.1 they require. Its quite gay.

Rest of ya life... that's the NSW HSC!

Well that's the test at least. The HSC testing combined with your school assesments results in your UAI (University Admissions Index). That would be the 'GPA'.

What is the max GPA you can get? (ie. perfect). The maximum UAI you can get is 100. I want to do engineering, requiring 85 at the University of New South Wales. Courses like medicine and law need high 90's.

or if you are in QLD, your school assessment and your QCS (Queensland Core Skills) Test determines your OP (Overall Position), which goes from 1 (best) to 25 (absolute douche). i.e. to get into engineering it is about OP 7 or 8 for University of Queensland and OP 1/2 for law medicine etc.
