So ive had bf2 for almost 10 months now, but only recently its been prone to shutting down about every 15 mins. It is hot here in australia at the moment, but ive played on 40*C days and it never shut down as often as it is doing now (27*C)

Anyway i contacted AMD and all that, they simply said they cant figure out the cause of it (this only happens in bf2) and that i should probably get a new heatsink.

Has anyone else had this sorta problem? according to some speedfan program my cpu is at like 80*C, which is like wayyyy too hot. I dont even know what a heatsink is, so could anyone give me an idea how much this will cost me if i have to go get it repaired in a computer shop (put it in $USD, $AUD or whatever, i can convert it)

I figure if im gonna get a need heatsink, i might as well get a new cpu fan too.

any help is appreciated.

heatsink = cpu fan

i would recommend getting a big heasink along the lines of a tuniq tower or a Thermalright Ultra 120. linky to heasink comparison. seeing as your room temp is way above what is considered normal you should go for a high performance one

EDIT: the price would be the price of the heatsink + some Arctic silver 5. so that would lead to about $50

EDIT 2: you could think about getting a water cooling set-up but by judging you post you dont know all that much about PCs so water cooling might be a bit too difficult to start with

Try another more powerfull PSU (power supply) I had the same problem and fixed it with the change of a psu we had laying around at work.
PSU was 450 watt.

As above Zalmann 9700NT was a worthwile purchase for me keeps my x2 4200 at 21 degrees (idle) at 2.7ghz!!!!! (41 degrees under full load) however saying that i do live in the UK, which as you like to jest is quite cold in comparisson, my old amd cooler was usually idle at 42 degrees (idle) at stock speeds so its a healthy improvement, i hate to think what it was under full load i never dared to try it

i dont think a better psu will fix a overheating CPU

[me being stupid]yeah the zalman 9700 is a very nice cooler because it is very quiet. but in his situation i would go for something more powerful. he is 20° over normal room temp so his CPU temps will also be roughly 20° hotter. thus if you are at load @ 42 degrees be would be a 62° which is already on the brink of too hot. every ° chopped of the load temp is important here[/me being stupid]. Just ignore what i wrote here

EDIT: damm that was stupid

Sounds to me like either your heatsink is clogged with dust, or your heatsink fan is not working, or both. If you don't want to stuff around too much, I'd take it to a computer shop (a speciallist computer shop - not a Harvey Norman type shop). If it's a simple problem they should be able to fix you up for a small cost. If you haven't overclocked then the heatsink you have should be fine. Especially since you've been playing BF2 for quite a while with no problems.

Have you done anything to your computer like changing the CPU voltage or removing the heatsink from the CPU? If the heatsink was removed but not reseated properly that could also be the cause.

Assuming your CPU is an Athlon 64, I recommend getting an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. Cools great, is easy to install and doesn't cost a lot.

You may also want to consider turning off the Cool & Quiet if you have that on.
