help with friends computer

im sitting here in my a+ class and trying to fix my friends computer for him and i cant see wut is cause this

it boots up fine then after the logo it has a black screen and it stays there
tryed in safe mode and it stops at mup.sys
wut could be the problem?

spec Dell
2.2ghz
256 ram
everything is onboard

After what logo? The XP (if he's running XP..) logo? Or the BIOS logo?

I'm guessing "mup.sys" is corrupt. Try doing a repair installation of Windows.

Put his windows xp disc in and press F8 or f12 whatever the boot menu button is on the pc on load up to get into boot menu then repair windows like crazed said.

Does it make clicking noises?

It's probably just a corrupt system file.

But, you can run diagnostic software provided by the hard drive manufacturer to be sure.

update i did a reformat of his computer and it was infact the OS *fucking dell piece of shit* but ya thank you guy for giving me hints +1 all
