Say I have a Belkin G Router 802.11G (F5D7230-4) but no Wireless cards/USB dongles,
the reason why don't have any wireless cards is because I use the router just for my PSP as an access point to get on the net. (I had a wireless card before, but it was more than useless, so i took it back to the shop)
And so the story goes like this:
Tomorrow I'm moving to my friend's place for 11 days, and he doesn't have internet. But I'm still taking my PC there.
I need the internet because i have TAFE work to do. And no, I'm not planing to go to internet cafe's.

Question: can I use the wireless router to sniff out nearby wireless connections and 'borrow' the internet that flows through them?

I know there are some connections around where I will be staying, plus I will be on the second floor of the house.
And I'm very sure that I will be in range of about 3-5 connections.

So any ideas anyone?

What about this situation:

There are 2 PC's
One has porn (pc1), other one (pc2) doesn't.

Pc1 sends porn to pc2 via wireless.
Router gets the porn, and goes: hmm, this is going to pc2
and sends it to pc2.
Isn't that how it all works?!

yeah like cyborg said, i think u need the wireless card to ACCESS the wireless networks mate

wouldn't your wireless router have to be connected to (say, ur laptop for example) to access the net anyway?

no, showing and example and attempting to point out that a router CAN SEND send information to other personal computers.
and btw. my friend doesn't have a computer.

The router will not do what you want to do.  The router can be a wireless station, but it must get its ISP source directly.  It will not take in the signal of another wireless station and give you internet access.  You will need a wireless card in your computer to do what you want to do.

Thats only on a local network, yes they can receive signals but only from machines actually linked to that specific router. They also connect to the internet via a hardwire not via wireless. Trying to connect to someone else's network using just a wireless router probably is possible but would probably mean d/ling loads of hacks and cracks and flashing you're router's bios, assuming you can find the instructions anywhere anyway.

Probably just easier to spend the £10 / $20 on getting a dongle to be honest ;D

The cheapest Dongle/wireless card here is $45AUD (thats pretty much like buying 1 cheap tire for a small/medium car)
I guess i will have to use TAFE's library... fun..

you need a card that can recieve signals

and even if you did you would need to find a network that isnt ecrypted using WEP

and sinse most networks are to stop people "borrowing" you have no chance.

There are ways round WEP which is useful when moving house and you don't yet have a phone line to connect to the internet with

Problems come when routers have been set up to only allow specific MAC address' and are WEP encrypted, in those cases moving on is usually the best option

WEP encrypted networks are easy to crack.  The tools that can intercept and decode them are readily available and it doesn't take long.  They will even allow you to spoof a MAC address.  WPA encrypted networks are a bit tougher.
