I'm shipping out to Parris Island this summer. What do I need to know? I'm running 3 miles a day, 50-60 push ups a minute, and 50-60 sit ups a minute. My recruiter told me its basically just a lot of running, but I want more details. Anyone?

How are you at pullups? For the USMC PRT, max is 20, and 1 pullup gets you more points than 1 pushup or situp. Make sure you can beast them going in and you will have a leg up. The swimming sucks. The detailers make you swim distance, sprints, and for water survival, they do basic drownproofing and disorientation.

Your physical fitness going in determines your inital advantage. In the end, you will be more than ready no matter your abilities prior to entering boot camp.

Just remember that your DIs are people too and are trying their best to show their best. Most DIs will email your loved ones with pictures and updates. I'm just saying this because putting camp in perspective and making it a game (to a point) is healthy and helps you wrap your mind around things.

edit: oh yeah do not bring anything besides important paperwork and the clothes on your back. Everything else will be issued. I was reading an about.com article about it http://usmilitary.about.com/od/marinejo … ebasic.htm and a lot of the stuff is true. One of the gayest things you'll have to do is memorize professional knowledge. IMO, no need to worry about drill; they will teach you and it comes naturally.

Hope this all helps

I can do 10 pull ups. I'll make a note of this.

I CAN'T SWIM!! OMG. Will I be delayed because I have to be taught?

Do you live around any community pools or any bodies of water? If you do, see if some people around where you live can help you learn before you go.

swim quails are a big factor on if you advance or if you get dropped back { you do NOT want to get dropped back and held on that island another week}

they will teach you but its better you start hitting the pool NOW - get used to swimming in full clothing, pack, kevlar and rifle

heres a little vid on someone during swim quails {don't be like him}

Humps [hikes] are nothing in boot camp - wait till you hit the fleet , but you better do some humps with gear to get used to it

Now when the Green belt DI's are in your face chewing your ass - Don't take offence the guy to your left or right will get his ass chewed in a few secs, its when the Senior chews you is when its bad

Make sure that you can do dead hang pull-ups, the more the better!  push-ups will come naturally, i got in trouble one day (near graduation) and ended up doing nearly 500 push-ups in about an hour, it's not that bad.  Make sure you can somewhat SWIM!!  THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!  other than that, i actually liked boot, the DI's will get crazy, it's their job, just don't piss off the SENIOR, that is the worst thing that you can do, oh-yeah when you get to 3rd phase you might get another DI or two, one will be fresh out of DI school, and one will be a "heavy" its his job to push you even harder than the rest of the DI's.

good luck and SEMPER FI

Very true advice! I ate Peanut Butter & Jelly at almost every lunch & dinner. Keep your eyes straight, dont flinch a muscle! Again dont flinch! Sit Indian style with your left foot over the right, start now, you gotta get used to sitting like that.( If you are right handed and will shoot right-sided) Also, if your recruiter gave you a little handbook on US General Orders, memorize them. Finally I read Tom Clancy's Book, while flying to boot camp,but not necessary, I gave it to  some other new boot after i finished it.

Oh yeah, get laid before you leave, chicks dig guys shipping off to be future Marines.

EDIT:

Swimming=Relax+Breathing. You can be taught! I was last rated WSQ, Water Swim Qualified, the highest rating, besides being an Instructor. So I helped a handful of Marines that could barely attain Level 3 , which is what you need to pass, at the minimum. I strongly recommend you get used to being in the water, Being a Marine means being part fish, IMO, not really being in the Fleet, But the stronger a swimmer you are, the better off you are!

EDIT, EDIT:      See, another true fact: HA HA HA "chicks dig guys shipping off to be future Marines", same line I tossed to some random hot chick 2 nites before I went to MEPS then the Island - seremaker

we totally messed with the new DI, but he was a cool guy, not to mention a pt stud, so it was wise to stay on his good side.  never ever, repeat, never ever stare a DI in the eyes, it will be one of your worse days ever!!
ya-know, looking back i had a great time in boot.  while i was there it kinda sucked but it wasn't that bad, just gotta be mentally tough, the physical toughness is easy.
