This is a photographer's collection of his visit to Belarus, where he saw the effects that Chernobyl had on the children there.  Something that must be seen and heard to believe...

hmm very touching. Amazing how one screw up can do that much damage.

The page worked for me just fine, and it left me quite speechless.

I remember the accident, although I was only 6 years old at the time. Just awful.

Nuclear power is clean and safe, if done correctly. Soviet power plants were too often neglected and didn't receive funding for general maintenance. This lead inevitably to disasters such as the Chernobyl accident.

I'm very sceptic over the management of todays Russian nuclear power plants. Finland imports 50% of it's used energy from Russia, and then we have the Green Party of Finland (the treehuggers) fighting against the building of a new nuclear reactor in Finland.

Obviusly they don't see the big picture in:
- Lessening the stress of Russian power plants with questionable reliability (both nuclear and e.g. coal powered)
- Increasing self-sufficiency in terms of energy production
- Producing cleaner energy

Yes, cleaner. If everything is done correctly, nuclear power is the best possible alternative at the moment in terms of energy production vs. use of natural resources/pollution. Let's hope we get some fusion power going soon, though.

DonFck:  Actually, the issue with Russian power plants wasn't necessarily that there was anything wrong with them, but that they didn't have proper fail safes.  Which is fine: if nothing goes wrong.

One quite unexpected thing is that actual area around Chernobyl isn't some nuclear wilderness as seen in STALKER (which I'm installing while writing this), it looks alot more like a nature preserve. The radiation levels now are under those found naturaly in some parts of the world, and because nobody wants to go anywhere near the place, there is very little pollution there now.

It turns out that the radiation exposure and fallout from chernobyl were less damaging to the surrounding wildlife than the people who were there before.

No.  The design of the reactor was poor and dangerous.  I've read about it.  Check out Wikipedia. it also has an article about it.

(yes, I am well aware of the reliability of wikipedia.  Though, the article does coincide with other things I have read about the Chernobyl disaster)

Even when I was young, I was always fascinated with the Chernobyl incident.  The power of nuclear energy, the good and like this thread shows, the horrible.

That was then, this is now. Look at how technology has advanced in just the past 7 years. And you know how Safety is usually top priority nowadays, especially in "Western" nations. We shouldn't be so scared about Nuclear energy these days. Beats fossil fuels any day. Personally i love a nice big dam or wind farms (looks cool) or solar energy to get power, but for the main portion of energy i wouldn't mind it coming from nukular chain reactions and inanimate carbon rods (simpsons ftw).

Ooh, wow, Wikipedia.  That certainly trumps the 3 months I spent looking at nuclear reactors in Physics.  Or not.

Where did I say that it wasn't a poor design?  A lack of failsafes generally indicates danger.

Except for the waste products that remain lethal for hundreds of years and manage to leak through nearly all containment systems.

Deadly Waste Has Leaked Into Washington Groundwater

Hanford is a classic study in how our government and energy producing corporations deal with such situations: "stall until it's someone else's problem" or "award contracts to our buddies and hope they do it right", all with the caveat of "Either way, we don't live near the site so it's all good". People claiming nuclear power is "clean" always leave out the part about the waste.

Except that modern reactors can keep reusing waste for a long time, resulting in very small amounts.  Further, some of that waste can then be used for other purposes.

I would make some crack about the revival of the thread, but it gives me a good place to laugh at environmentalists too stupid to realize nuclear power is a good thing.

Edit: And mourn how bad life was for the millions trapped behind the Iron Curtain.
