Why don't you do it?  It beats the automatic spray and pray anyday.

Single shot only for long range combat. The rest is either auto or bust. Unfortunately I have neither been gifted with an aimbot (cue..) or super human reflexes to be any good at close combat with single shot only.

PR taught me the beauty of singe shot at any distance. Only time I spray and pray is at 20 meters or less.

i single shot all the time in long range with assault kit; for CQC i use my NOOb tube   plus its also fun to single shot rapidly in a group of enemies and they dont' know where you are and they panic as they try to revive each other.

Technically you never really need to switch to single shot. You can achieve the same result by just tapping the left mouse button. The switch to semiautomatic mode doesn't seem to provide any immediate accuracy bonus, either.

Actually it does..

Single Shot improves the guns accuracy..

Just like scoping a gun improves it accuracy over just using crosshairs.

The crosshairs are off in Vanilla, just so you know.

Sorry I meant the scopes are off in bf2 not crosshairs (the crosshairs aren't off its just random deviation)

OK? shooting with the site is still more accure then crosshairs....The crosshairs are off by less then the deviation added for no scope, and by a constant amount, rather then a random coefficient.

Are you sure deviation varies for single shot vs a single shot from automatic mode?

Ive NEVER seen a number or stat to support that, what I have always seen is figures for increased deviation of successive shots rather then a set difference between the two modes.

To use the G36c as an example the wiki says
Min Deviation    0.2
Deviation Standing / Crouching / Prone    1.5/1.2/1
Deviation Mod when Zoomed    0.75
Deviation Added per Shot    0.2 (2)
See its not deviation in single automatice, its per shot over above the first one. (unless the wiki is wrong?)

Well, I just recently learned the advantages of single shotting my way to victory.  Buts only because I used to play arcade style FPS's.  This is my first "real-world" FPS.  Then I install Project Reality.............

I only just go full auto with the AK101, G36E/C, and MP7.
The other guns I just swap between the fire modes depending on the situation.
I have discovered though, that the scar-l is extremely effective if used in single shot at close range.

But in single shot, they do not add that ".2" to each shot, because each time you pull your finger off the trigger, it's considered a new shot.

The wiki is never wrong.

What happens if you click the mouse several times very quickly in single-shot mode? Does the deviation per shot get added like you're on auto? That's what seemed to happen when I was screwing around and bound my scrollwheel to fire. I got really fast shots on single-shot and burst but they were inaccurate after the first one.

If you ever played Hidden source the HL2 mod the didn't have a restriction on the pistols fire rate, you could have a pistol empty itself in 1 second .

Semantics time. Single-shot mode - as in SAFE-SEMI-AUTO on the receiver of an M4A1 - does not make it more accurate. However firing in single shots and waiting for the crosshair to settle does.

You never need to switch to single shot in my experiance, as previously mentioned, just by using short bursts of 2 or 3 bullets at a time, you can effectively take people out from long range without switching firing rates.

i usually use single shot so i can fire fast at medium/long range without going full auto

if i'm not shooting at long range i usually switch to auto/burst but i can still top most people out with just single shot in cqc
