Does exactly what it says on the tin. Tomorrow I shall be playing against the royal navy 1st XI in portsmouth. They going down! lol. I'll just be careful not to bend over leaving myself opent to "challenges" from behind. I shall let you all know how we get on so we can laugh about the navy.

Navy Blues

Once again a failure to score goals cost the AFA 18 side dearly as they went down 0-1 to a very direct and physical Royal Navy side at Portsmouth on Sunday.

In their four Home Counties Youth Championships to date the U18s have managed to score only two goals and this trend was continued when four gilt edged chances went begging - two in each half.

Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half the AFA looked solid with debutant Charlie Sewell slotting in well at Centre Half alongside Rob Whitfield and full backs Serghides and Metivier looking calm and composed.

Pacey debutant Joe Bennis made his debut up front and his speed and strength always looked likely to cause the muscular Navy defence problems. He forced an excellent point blank save when one on one with the Navy keeper half way through the first half and again forced a reflex save from close range as half time approached. The AFA should have gone in two nil up but 0-0 it was.

The half time team talk focused on the need to match the Navy physically but seconds after the restart the AFA were one nil down to a a scrambled goal when a free kick was not dealt with decisively, an instinctive parry from the otherwise untroubled AFA keeper Tom Slabber was not cleared and the ball was bundled home.

The AFA responded strongly but despite having the lions share of possession throughout the second period, they could not convert their advantage into goals.

A thunderous 25 yard volley from Kevin Metivier scraped the bar but when the lively Joe Bennis was again through one and one, the watching bench were up on their feet only to see the Winchmore Hill striker put his first shot against the keeper and then scoop the rebound over the bar.

The full time whistle left the AFA ruing a game they should have won but positive displays from debutants Billy Meyer and Joe Riley along with those made by Bennis and Sewell were the bright spots on a day when the goals would still not come.

Thanks to AFA President Bill Evans and his wife who made the long journey South to support the side.
no prizes for guessing who I am. As for scooping the rebound over the bar, it was more launching it into the distance. lol. Was going too quick so I couldn't cushion it
