Well, I just got oblivion last night, and I've been reading up on it a bit, and I'm a little worried I picked some major skills that might end up screwing me over in the long run.
Here they are: Athletics, Acrobatics, Blade, Block, Restoration, Light armor, Marksman

Athletics, acrobatics, blade, and block in particular are what i'm worried about, because i use them constantly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what i should have done? Should i have put those four as minor skills and went with something else?

Thanks in advance for insight.

Unmodded oblivion has the wonderful problem that picking major skills that you will use a lot will cause you to level up too fast, thus getting u whooped by level 50 bandits with glass armour before you even have a horse...

So basically if you picked skills that you are going to use a lot, you're going to have a tough time later.

I picked stuff i never use, like blunt/hand to hand/mysticism for my majors. But that way I finished the game at level 1 which wasn't fun at all.

do a search for francesco's balancing mods on www.tessource.net. In fact, just take a look at all the top downloaded mods. Half of them are NEEDED to play the game properly: reworked menu's, texture enhancements (faces, long distance ground), and a few other major adjustments. Download them NOW, and not when you've already got a game going.

now, once youve installed francesco's balancing mod

Athletics - useless. Keep it as a minor skill
Acrobatics - slightly useful, but really it's a skill to level up quickly with
Blade - of course
Block - yes
Restoration - no. unless if you're really going to use it
Light armor - if youre going to use restoration, yes. Otherwise, not really
Marksman - NO. one weapon skill only.

Only have one type of weapon as a major skill. two won't get you anywhere. Armor is better replaced by a skill like illusion which can offer night-eye, paralyze, invisibilty, and several other very useful spells. restoration can be replaced by alchemy if you want.

I've played oblivion for almost 150 hours, so I've got a fair bit of experience with what works in the end. Only have skills that you will definetely use, and constantly.

based on the skills you chose im guessing you want a kind of ranger as character. Light armor, bow and sword, healing, etc. However, you really should choose between blade or bow. Don't have both. There are also few benefits to having light armor if you're not trying to sneak around or be quick. However, as you had athletics and acrobatics you're better off with light than heavy.

my recommendation:

-blade
-block
-light armor
-acrobatics
-restoration
-illusion
-fill this one up with anything you like. Athetlics isn't useful, so don't. I'd recommend either armorer or mercantile, and out of those two armorer would be the best.

download that mod so you can choose the skills you want. It greatly improves the gameplay.

Thanks sarge for the thoughts.

I have only one question left: Does having major skills that i will use constantly be a problem? Have you run into any issues with opponents being much stronger than you? Have you reached a level cap because you can't get the ten major skill point increases anymore?

Thanks again for the help.

yes and no:

if you use said level balancing mod you can safely have your actual skills as major skills. other creatures in the game won't level up with you in that rediculous way. I'm close to the level cap on my most played character, who is now level 40 and has about 2 or 3 left if I can remember correctly. However, 4 of his attributes (strength, agility, etc.) are at 100, so it's really not so bad.
I really don't recommend that you have useless skills as major skills. You won't level up, which is already enough of a reason not to uselessify your skills.

Mine are exactly identicaly to yours, except instead of acrobatics, I have armorer.  So far mine have worked out real well, especially when I'm off exploring and doing stuff in the middle of nowhere.  Haven't beaten the game yet though, so maybe I shouldn't be talking.
