That's the answer exactly.
You put some shots into a jet or helicopter and then they buggered off to the carrier to get repaired. While at the carrier they crashed. Because the carrier was the final blow that's why the weapon registers as the USS Essex. You get the kill because you did most of the damage.
As a pilot I get charge with cheating every so often because of this. People don't understand how I can kill someone with a LAV while flying the SU-34 for instance. Here's how:
- bombs land close to LAV without destroying
- LAV sustains critical damage and continues to burn
- LAV blows up taking passenger(s) with it
- I get credit for killing using the LAV
