MSN released an editorial on the benefit of playing video games. You might have heard of a few of these possible benefits, but I for one was surprised at some of them:

http://health.msn.com/general/articlepa … p;GT1=9145

Anyone who has been playing video games for awhile has probably seen an improvement in things such as hand/eye coordination, reaction time, and even critical thinking. However, a new study has shown that video games not only improve some of these functions but might even be used to benefit us in other aspects of life. In the near future, video games could be used to help train some of the people that perform important jobs which require a high level of concentration (such as a surgeon). Games have even been shown to work as a sort of running distraction from pain, such as in the case of paying a dreaded trip to the dentist. I just thought it was cool to think of some of the possibilities that gaming possesses, not to mention it is a little comfort to me that I might not be wasting my time completely while playing them . Any thoughts on where we might use games to hone other skills?

I'd say games help people out, and always have said that. Some people are just gay.

I'd say they have helped me meet lots and lots of people, all over the world too!

Exactly, my parents allways say ''virtual friends'' because I've never met em. But I've met people  from all kinds of country's.

I have met one person from BF2s...

I also met up my (now Ex) girlfriend whom I met over the net.

It has had a major effect on me. long story short:

I played CS before all other online games
I was 10-14 while I was playing it (1.3-1.5 good times)
I'd occasionaly slip into a weird concentration and pull off a perfect shot (no, not luck) but lose it whenever I realised it
I forgot about it for a long time
then I played BF2 for over a year and became very good at it
when I quit a few months ago to play other games I got frustrated by how much I sucked at them
I didn't just practice endlessly thinking I'd get better. Out of frustration I saught to know how you had to practice, and I based it on how I'd learned to play BF2. But then I remembered that whole concentration-moment thing from CS. It's hard to explain, but I put two and two together (BF2 and that) and it made sense, and now I've been practicing how to concentrate and focus your mind to do what you want properly for months now. And it's working very well, because I can apply it to just about anything I want to do.

for example, you can go through the moment of a kill endlessly while playing, focusing entirely on it, adjusting to where you go. I'm constantly picturing every possible place for an enemy to appear, every action I must take, the way I aim (distance), shot control, the way I move the mouse, the moment I click, even the feeling of moving my index finger. And not just a picture, but the entire scene: movement included. That way, the moment any one of those potential scenario's becomes reality, you are prepared for it and if you practiced it correctly, you already have an exact picture of what to do and how to do it. It is EXTREMELY effective in FPS games. However, you can only really get away with this if you can actually concentrate

Woot! Another excuse to sit here and play BF2 24/7.
