Hey all

Ill get straight to my problem

I ordered a new mobo yesterday, and an 8800gts.  My problem is that the motherboard only has one IDE slot, but i have an IDE hard drive and DVD drive... i obviously need them both operational at the same time to reinstall windows and games and such.

Problem is, im not sure its possible to have the Hard drive set as MASTER, and DVD drive set as SLAVE on the same IDE cable.  I dont think it will work.  I cant buy a new hard drive as im broke really bad from the other two things.

I have a SATA->IDE dongle, but i tried that in my current motherboard and it doesnt seem to work at all.. the dongle is only Sata 1, so i dont know if it will work with SATA2.  When used on my hard drive, it did not boot, when used on dvd drive, the dvd drive did not apear in windows... the packaging says there is no need for drivers so that cant be it.

So my problem is...is there a way i can get them both on the same IDE channel without problems?!  I dont want to have the new stuff but have to wait ages to get a new hard drive, the one i have now is fairly new!!!

Thanks in advance, please help fast!! Karma for help

It is perfectly possible to have both DVD and HD on the same IDE cable. Thats exactly what the MASTER SLAVE setting is for. As long as one is Mster and the other slav, you'll have no probs.

you can have a HD working on the same IDE cable as the DVD drive at least to my knowledge

you either like you said need to see if that dongle does the job

ohh and i think SATA I will work with SATA II it just means you cant remove the jumper from the back to have the 300Mb/s transfer rate

you can pic a good WD up for around like £30 or seagate

what mobo do you have/ordered btw.?

I currently have the 775Dual-vsta, ordered Gigabyte DS3.

Hmm.  I might have to get a sata dvd drive then since thats cheaper

SATA would be a better option

much faster than the old IDE drives

get 2 if you can afford them and RAID 0 them

No reason why it wont work, it'll be fine. Not the best way to set it up but it'll work.

Just as a temporary measure this is.  I will get a new sata dvd drive when i have the cash so that i dont need to slave anything.

Well i did it on my current motherboard and it all seems fine, no problems booting, no changes needed in bios... hdd as master, dvdrw as slave, and its all good, hope it works like this when i get my new motherboard lol

who cares, its only the interface that talks at 300mbs, the data still comes out a lot slower, any drive can only work as fast as its platter can spin.
