Specs:

  • DFi Lanparty socket 939 Ultra-D mobo
  • AMD 3800+ Socket 939 Dualcore CPU
  • NVidia GeForce 7900 GT 256MB
  • 250 GB Harddisk (barracuda)
  • 2 gigs of corshair ram
  • 450W Power supply
OK, So I am looking for a little more power in my machine. For example - being able to play with fraps on at a descent FPS, Play the upcoming DX10 games and generaly have a faster PC (windows movie maker lags...). UltimateNewbie told me in a thread I made previously that I should wait and get a "2007 machine". Now, is this the time to get one? Are the "2007 machines" available now?I would guess that the first step to take is upgrading to the Core 2 duo, meaning I need a new modo as well, and get an 8800 or something like that. Here are some questions:
  • Assuming I should upgrade to the Core2duo, which one should I get?
  • Which mobo should I get to fit with the CPU in Question 1?
  • What Graphic card should I get? ATi or NVidia?
  • I'm thinking about upgrading to 4 gigs of ram... Thoughts on that?
  • IF I get 4 gigs of ram, should I go 2x2 or can I go 4x1 as well?
  • Will I need to upgrade my Power Supply with these additions?
  • Will raiding my hard drive increase performance?
  • If you aswered yes to all these questions, should I just buy a new PC as I am changing out pretty much everything anyway?

thx

btw, no real budjet here, just don't go overboard... No dual quadro cores or double 8800's, no Water Cooling or Plane Engines.

700 Watt PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
Evga 680i SLI mobo
2GB OCZ P2-9200 Ram
Nvidia 8800GTX
150 GB Raptor

Get an extra 2 gigs of ram when you get Vista.

For cooling, zalman is releasing a VF1000 cooler for the 8800 series, and for CPU get a Tuniq Tower 120

@ Cyborg... Is Vista worth getting? If so, 32 or 64 bit?

Let vista stable for a while, wait till they release service pack 1. Get 64 bit while your at it, use your CPU to it's full strengths.

I run an E660 and, EVGA 680i board, 2 gigs xms2, but the best thing i have done with my computer is get two WD HDD 160gb and use them in RAID 0.  I highly recommend it, its very fast.  Only downside i can think of is if i lose one drive i lose EVERYTHING.

1.I think the best choice, is the cheapest choice to be honest with u, and heres why.  The E6300 is a great overclocker (as are all C2D) and assuming u get a good mobo, the speed can be clocked at double on air, I believe 'bertser7' has done just that with his if I remember.  Secondly, C2D replacement is due september (penryn or something like that 45nm as oppose to 65nm) time, so I dont see the point spending a lot on say a quad core, when u can get the next gen in a few months, or buy a existing C2D chip then for a fraction of the price.

2.Either the Asus P5W DH Deluxe or pretty much any N680i mobo (bar the BFG).  What u wanna look for is a board capable of running two graphics cards at PCI-e 16 (not anything lower than 16 less its a physics card).

3.Depends who u are more a fan of, ATIs card is supposed to beat the 8800GTX, but no sooner when that is released will nvidia release this 8800Ultra to trump them again, then all the other cards expensive and cheaper alike, depends on the budget, though if u get tht n680i board, probably best to go nvidia.

4.For running vista 4GB does make life a hell of a lot easier, but on XP I doubt the speed increase would be worth the expense.

5.4x1 for max performance (u wanna go for 800mhz or more)

6.yup, shouldnt bother with anything less than 600, hiper 730W is a good buy.

7.If u do RAID 0 then yea, but there are problems with RAID (risk like loosing ur data, though I guess everyone runs that risk all the time)

8.Hell yes, like u said ur changing pretty much everything, unless u wanna keep ur current case
