Upgrading to windows vista...

...don't know how lol. I have windows XP pro (32bit) on my computer right now and I'm upgrading to windows vista ultimate (64 bit). This chart says I can do it without a clean HDD (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/produc … paths.mspx)

When I put the CD in it says d/setup.exe is not a valid winxp32 operation. What do I do?

EDIT:
Do I put it in the CD drive then reboot and press the "boot from CD" and go from there, will I loose my documents?

i think that is only for 32bit vista. AFAIK you always need to do clean installs for x64

I reccomend buying a new HDD. That way you can do Dual Boot. Which i HIGHLY reccomend when using Vista. because Vista is so UNSTABLE.

EDIT: at least according to MS there is no way to do an in-place upgrade to x64 vista. You'll have to reinstall

No.....im saying that you have 1 HDD running Xp 32 and the other HDD running Vista 64. That way if Vista 64 dies you can easily choose to boot from your XP HDD without losing anything. Fail safe.

must have misunderstood you when you said:

also "second drive" would usually denote a 2nd physical HD

He can do it either way. your way seems to have more risks. But Having 2 seperate physical drives ensures safety but has a higher price.

make sure to back everything up beforehand

method 1:
when installing windows, instead of installing to your current partition, delete it, make a new one @ whatever size you want, install to that. make a second one through "my computer" --> manage --> disk management

method 2:
use something like norton partition magic in windows to resize your current partition and to make a new one

And I'd avoid the 64 bit Vista. It doesn't run 16 bit applications. Some 32 bit applications use 16 bit installers. And do a search for current 64 bit applications. Currently there isn't a lot of them that aren't hardcore server software.
