so, I'm watching, I think it's a part of season two, Opilio season.

anyways, the boats were all waiting for something via radio from the fish and game service, and i glanced away from the TV for a second to read something. i glance back and realize i missed it, and it was pretty big, as it made the captian of lady alaska kinda start crying. I think it had something to do with the future of opilio season.

can anybody recollect what i missed? (i just started watching this show this week, so thats why i ask now)

I don't think that was it, because the lady alaska guy said something about hoping his crew members could find jobs and that it had been a good 30 year run, and another captain said he was still going to get his pots as fast as he could because he wanted to get done sooner or something like that.

I could be wrong but I think it had to do with how the regulations on crab fishing was gonna change and that this was the start of the last year under the old system.  In the past, it was basically a free for all...each ship had no individual quota meaning they could fish and catch as much as they could within the timeframe and within the seasons quota.  In the future, each ship will be given an individual quota based on its past year take which takes a lot of of the competitiveness of the sport and drives a lot of the smaller guys out of the business altogether.

So, basically seeing how tradition is being compromised by the regulatory agencies has made most of the old timers teery eyed.

They probably closed the season.  Fishing seasons in Alaska (and elsewhere) are extremely volatile.  The window opens and closes daily, based off numbers coming in relating to the size of the entire industry's catch, the predicted numbers of crabs, and the locations/timing of the catches.

It already is based on quotas and regulations.

Umm..yea...thats what I was saying.  In the past each ship didn't have an individual quota of catch but the season as a whole did.  Meaning, depending on how hard you worked and how lucky your fishing was, you could take a large or small portion of the whole pie.

Under NEW regulations, each ship now has an individual quota, so you know exactly how much you can catch this year.  That means if you catch your quota within the first week....say 250,000 pds crab, then you can't fish anymore even if the season lasts another 2 weeks.  Under this method, its not real business savvy for smaller operations to fish and thus pushes out the small guy.

EDIT: If you're interested to learn more, theres a discussion at:  http://community.discovery.com/eve/foru … 2221966288
that goes more into recent regulatory changes.

Well if he was crying about the future of crab fishing, it must have been about the fact that next season all boats will have their own quotum, so no more who gets the most wins, but everyone gets a piece of the pie.

I still think I'm right. Maybe... because, I watched the second season too and I don't remember them crying about regulations changing. I remember seeing when the season ended 48 hrs early, but they didn't cry. They were pissed.

He is right, I have the first two seasons and have watched them twice...  last year one boat went over the quota and lost a bunch of money just cause they weren't counting the crabs as they put them into the holding areas.
