Argh! I just got the Veteran Sniper Combat Badge because I happened to be wearing the sniper kit while playing as commander.

Even though I'm useless at getting the badges, I don't want to get them this way. Anyone else wish they'd create a Commander entry on the kit line, so that artillery kills didn't count for any soldier kit?

uhm, it could be just me, but as far as I know, the Arty. kills dont count as a kill, but as commander score, if they DO count as a killscore, I would have gotten a whole lot of badges far sooner.

Actually, Arty kills do not increase your commander score.  They actually prevent your commander score from increasing because your commander score is the average of your teams (not quite that simple but that's the basics), and so with you killing enemies and not your team-mates your commander score suffers.
However, the kills are registered to what kit you are using, what vehicle you are in etc etc.
So for instance, you can be brand new to the game and if you happen to grab commander as a sniper and arty 10 enemies(not sure of basic badge requirement) while sitting in a tow for 5 minutes, you will get the basic sniper badge, basic ground defense badge and basic ground defense ribbon.

Is that why I see commanders sat in guns they're not firing? I thought that was a lame hiding place. One of the most amusing things as a commander is wondering how long before a spec-ops soldier finds you cowering under a shrub.

I really wish DICE had kept artillery kills to a commander kit, and not counted them for badge requirements. Hell, they could even have created an artillery kills badge if it turned them on. Better than being awarded a sniper badge for hiding under a shrub trying to thin out the enemy around a distant flag with the artillery.

arty kills count as kills to that kit and kills overall

but not to your round score so you will only see the difference when you look at your stats

when u make neough kills with arty ull get the combat badges.

i remember when spec forces came out i palyed commander and didnt even got out of base (just killed 3 with the sa80) but i killed with the arty and got my vet combat specialist.. for killin peeps with arty.

haha same here. I went to the local LAN place because I'm cheap and played SF and got basic assault specialist. up to that point I had never played assault even on Vanilla. but I had to try out the F2000. now I realize it was a giant waste of unlock because it's accuracy is shit when zoomed...

I got the Transport award on Sharqi. The U.S. team would constantly drive Vodniks or humvees over to the flag where the radar is. So I parked a Vodnik in front of the entrance and laid down mines in front. I would consistently perform scans while in the commander screen mode. When I was someone coming, I'd go back to combat mode. But I was sitting in there so long, I got the award. Didn't mean to, but it wasn't award whoring, since I killed the same guy like four times trying to come over. Must have been a noob.

Also, I wouldn't say arty kills lower your score, because arty can help your team win, which means your commander score gets doubled.
