get an upgrade in your speed connection from your ISP. Yes, it requires more $$$. Also, join servers that are near your current location, this website can help you out : Game Monitor. Good luck.

get a better connection (will only help a little unless you have a really crappy one) and play on servers that are close to you. You can't really lower it
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

imho, bandwith has close to nothing to do with ping, since ping depends on the time your data needs to travel. Above the recommended bandwith, there's not much of a difference you'll notice.
One example that should give you an idea of what really is important: I (with 4 Mbit) have about the same ping on a server as someone with 16 Mbit, although I'm geographically nowhere near the server while he is. How can this be?
Here's a schematic description of the main "checkpoints" your data has to pass (leaving out many other things, though):

You

V

Your provider's data center

V

Your countries' main data center

V

The other Country's main data center

V

The data center where the server is located

V

The server

Now, usually the connections between data centers are very fast. So the only way to get a lower ping is to get somehow nearer to a data center by changing your provider. Your connection does not necessarily need to be faster, again, ping is a matter of speed rather than a matter of bandwith. And speed stays about the same, so it's distance that matters.

ok thanks. but i have noticed that on some servers i play on regularly that my ping is higher than normal (120 ping went up to like 190) so i just thought that it could be cause by something in my computer.
but thanks for the tips.

any background tasks using the internet like programs updating or P2P etc. whilst playing online can worsen your ping

Do you have any anti-spyware/anti-virus programs?

If not, I recommend these:
For anti-spyware: Spysweeper, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-aware Personal Edition and AVG Anti-spyware.

For anti-virus: AVG Anti-virus, Bitdefender, and Zone Alarm.
