Hey guys

Just wanted to know your opinons about this subject. Humanitarian aid in Africa sum up to 400G $ aproximately since 1960. Actually, we can't report great improvements. People are still hungry, homeless, and schools are still missing in lots of countries. Plus, millions of people die of AIDS each year.

So, what do you think is the main reason why humanitarian aid didn't solve much problems ? Personally, I think that the 2 main reasons are that the aid is not sent to the right objective (short-time aid rather than developement aid). Secondly, governements are corrupted, and the biggest part of the money is not distributed to the civilians.

If you have any documents, articles, etc, feel free to share them.

The most help that is sent in there goes to different military factions, rebels, ... The protection of convoys is poor or there isn't any. Only remains of food get to the civilians... if they even do.
And probably the biggest problem is the mentality of the people down there. My colleague was in Africa for 2 years and he said, that the people don't even try to work, they're just waiting for their "gods" or UNICEF to save them. Don't get me wrong, they work as long as there are natural resources around, but when they are exhausted, they just give up all work and don't do anything (he was in mostly in the countries where famine is the worst-below Sahara. Nomads are better, they always move around and search for food). This may not be all true, but something has to be. We shouldn't give them food, we should teach them how to grow food.
I personally think that Africa is in such a bad shape, that it will take a long time to come to life.

Sorry, I want us to mind our own business and stop policing the world just as the EU socialists in this forum has suggested the USA needs to do. Let the EU handle it, I am willing to sit back and critique their actions without actually getting involved for once.

The point is not to tell the US to do something about Africa. The thing is, industralized countries have lost billions of dollars in aid in this continent, and we want to know why this didn't do much.

no shit with all that money spent on africa there has been no improvement. That is because coruption is rampant, local warlords, the desert is growing larger just no food, water is low, there is racial/tribe tensions in some parts, i just recently read in Time magazine that china is not really helping with the democratic growth in africa either.

now just to be cynical and play out my evil side i say "yes, i agree, give a man meat and he will live a day but teach him how to hunt he can live on by himself....so lets give them AK 47s to hunt!... and a couple of grenades,...maybe throw in a pkm to boot too"

Corruption of the government plays a huge factor. I agree with BlAiR_AgaiN on the point that we should be teaching them to grow food, how to manage themselves, instead of blindly sending them money and food. You have to have some kind of goal. I get quite annoyed at people who come to my school saying "help our charity, we make schools". Schools aren't going to be worth shit if the guys still go off and kill each other in civil wars, are they? You have to take one step at a time, and school isn't the first step.

People are going to hate me for saying this, but I really think most of Africa would be better off right now if it was still being run by European nations.

I'm of the opinion that aid needs to be focussed on one geographic area at a time rather than spread around.  Focus on one country at a time if need-be, get it up to western standards of living and then move to the next.  If some of them see tangible improvements they may be more inclined to look after it.
