Well, how good are they? I heard that a good helmet can deflect an ak-47 FMJ. Is that true?

Why don't they just layer the helmets with that new 'Dragon Skin' body armor we saw on that other thread?

From what I gathered while I was in the service, they aren't designed to stop bullets, deflect bullets or save you from bullets, they are designed to protect you from shrapnel.  Of course if a bullet hits the helmet at just the right angle, it will deflect, but this is true of any surface.

Those helmets are not as hard or as tough as you might think.  They are actually quite lightweight and feel similar to a lightweight clay pot wrapped in mesh if you were to tap on one.

Well here are 3 helmets in use by US Armed Forces right now.

There was an episode on Discovery of a show called "How it's made".  It featured the design of the modern US military kevlar helmet.  Quite interesting.  The helmet is actually made from a pattern of rectangular strips of kevlar that are layed over each other in a circular pattern.  They are then pressed and bonded into the shape.

well an ak47 full metal jacket doesnt say shit. it will make one hell of a difference if its a full 762 or a 545.

and no they arent designed to stop them.
shit the new FN round, the 5.7mm that is fired from the P-90 and the 5-7 handgun, is designed to penetrate up to three inches of body armor........

Yea it's to bad that when people are shooting at you they usually don't aim specifically for the helmet so it generally doesn't do you any good.

yes.  marlboro man is right.  ive posted a story about my buddy getting a sniper round to the dome.  he was at the prone manning the 240 and a 7.62MMX39MM round hit him right at the very lip of his helmet.  gave him a concousion and a black, a REALLY black eye.  he was unconscious for a minute and taken outta fight and patched up with a few stitches, a weeks rest, and he volunteered to go back in the shit when he could have milked it for at least another week.  he was big buff confident cocky motherfucker and i miss that asshole.  hes still in the active duty. prolly back in iraq.

Sweet story GS.

I bet it all depends on the weak points of the helmet.

Anyone notice how the G.I helmets are starting to look more and more like the old nazi helmets from WWII ?

Yes, I couldn't see how you wouldn't notice.   The reason for this is that, as much as I hate to admit it, the Germans were right on with their helmet design.  The designers are trying to hide it as much as possible, but the most effective helmet shape by far is that of the German helmets of WWII.  That is why they are slowly moving in that direction.

Another problem with the "new" kevlar helmets is that they "get soft" if you put bug spray on them with a high concentration of DEET (like the bug juice the army issues in the green bottle).  I have had two helmets where I had to trade them in because I put my finger through them -- really sucks.

wow...wow.  my platoon finally got issued those suckers when i was on R and R back in OIF 2.  when I came back I wasnt in a rush to get the helmet.  it just doesnt make sense to remove protection.  if my boy had a mitch helmet instead of the PASGT, he would have been gone.  in fact, it was the very reason why we switched to the mitch that saved his life with the kpod.  he was in the prone and the brim of his helmet drop down further on his face because of his body armor and then POP! helmet flies in the air and everyone thinks hes dead.

since ive come back in I still got my kpod.  matter of fact i have two.  I always end up with two helmets.

Yeah, if you consider 15 pounds floating around on your head and flogging your neck"quite lightweight". I've made more than my share of extended ruck marches with one on my head and it feels like 50 pounds by the time you're done. Sure you get used to the discomfort, but you're always fully aware of its presence.
