I've never really seen the behavior the OP describes outside of teenagers. In my adult life (I'm 31 now), I've never personally heard another adult go on and on pushing their atheism on others. What I do hear, and this shouldn't surprise any of you, is constant thanks to god for everything from the sun coming up again, to murders being caught. I can't cycle through the channels on my TV without hitting several religious stations and programs. I can't search radio from one end to the other without finding religious stations. Hell, I can't go a week without getting Christian stuff in my mailbox. Hardly a day goes by that I don't have someone around me talking about the great things their lord has done for them lately. I guess I just fail to see the big push of atheists coming out of the theological closet.
For a single atheist's example, I don't normally speak of religion at all in my personal life. I periodically post in a thread here and there, but that's it. I personally feel that I don't need the bias that I would have to deal with if I were completely open about it. All of my family are Christian, and only a couple even know my stance on things. Why should they? After all, it would only upset them, and if there's one truth in the world, it's that there is no argument that defeats faith when that faith is considered an acceptable rebuttal to ANY point. I couldn't console them in any way. It would just suck. At work, animosity is the enemy. I work with those people everyday, and the very last thing I need is to need to keep up with who is a judgemental bastard and who isn't. There are hundreds of them, and I deal with each and every one. It's just not feasible. Far easier to just nod and smile and never offer an opinion on religious comments. People are evil things, we all see the stupid shit that we hold against one another. I don't need that in my life if at all possible. I'm perfectly happy to live the rest of my life like this.
I've got no problem with someone being religious. Do whatever you need to do to get you through life as happy as can be. That being said, if you could find it in yourself to do so, please knock off all that evil and hypocrisy. Watching the news makes babies cry.
