I wanna be a better sniper, as I feel I suck at it. can someone write a good sniper class guide?
if you search there is one in the first few pages of threads and it also has links to three more in it.
I would like to see a guide written by a good sniper. I'm better than both of the guys who wrote the two guides that I have seen and I'm not all that great. I'd like to see a really good sniper write a guide.
2 major hints for good sniping in this game.
1. Tradecraft, tradecraft, tradecraft.
Things like dont snipe from the top of a ridge, as your outline is distinctive against the ridgeline.
You are better off going down the ridge just a little, even if that means you fully expose yourself, and let your kits camo help you blend in.
Even better is like sniping next to a tree or from a bush.
Mostly though, the best way to avoid being discovered is to make the long shots. Figure out where the targets are going to be, and then get just within clipping/fog distance.
Sniping at less than 100 meters is just stupid, youd be more effective with an assault rifle.
Second major thing with sniper rifles: let your aim "settle", especially at long ranges. Snapshots for sniper rifles just dont work worth a damn in this game.
When in doubt, take a deep breath and count to 5. or even 10 before taking the shot.
Once you get a feel for it and the slight, but non-trivial bullet shot, you will regularily be able to get head shots against still targets at over 250meters with an m24 or an m95. ( although the thick sights on the m95 make that more difficult than with an m24).

With the M95, aim for the chest, bigger target area, more chance of a hit, and doing 95 damage each shot, you are highly likely to kill the guy anyway.
Always let the scope settle, doesnt have to be for longer than like 0.2 of a second. But your aim will greatly improve.
Try to find a good position and stay there as long as possible, if you are spotted and start to take fire, pull back.
Try and hit stationary targets when theres the chance, much better chance of a hit. If you have to shoot at a moving target try to make sure the target is moving either towards or away from you, if he is moving parallel you have a much lower chance of scoring a hit on him (especially with BF2 gun physics)

am i missing something here? all of the tips that are still getting spewed forth are contained in the existing guides along with many other helpful hints and tips. save your energy. use the search function. read the wiki. have some milk and go to bed.
firts of all, the all the sniper rifles work diferent and you have to get use to them, specially the timming
the M95 is the sniper rifle with more bulle drop
there is a bit of bullet time at LONG distances
be in a higher places than you target always is better, you feel a big difference at mediun to long distances
for head shots
if a target is coming to you in a straid line, aim to the chest almost to the begining of the neck
if the target is running away from you in straid line, aim a little bit above the head they'll run to your bullet
if the target is running from left to right or viceberza, use the the orizontal line of your scope to put in line the head and shoot (one time before the head gets to the vertical line)
if you are near of 2 unawer enemy use the knife rather than the pistol
if there is a larger number, use the granades
if you see they are comming to you, laid down and plant a claymore infront of you and back up, if they get to close before you put the claymore, just drope a granade with the right click
if you are at mediun range and you mist a head shot, but still hit the enemy, just switch to pistol, you'll need just one hit with it
i hope this help
a by the way my nick is real-maton if you want ot check my time as sniper and kills

Practice makes perfect, that's all I can tell. I couldn't hit a barn door when i first started. Now I practically hit 80% of what I aim for, killing them with less than 2 shots.

real easy,
there is no bullet drop!!!!!!!!, just don't move your mouse, if you have one of those logitech game mouses use an keyboard key for fireing
bullet travel time does not exist
when someone sees you, move your ass an don't be a sitting duck,
try to keep distance, if you can youse a handgrenade or a knife your way to close,
stay low an aim carefully
i'm not that good but i'm growing into it, kudos to me

Ok I'll only tel you one thing to become a succesful sniper. Neverf follow your crosshair with the enemy. Wait untill it comes in yoiurs.
anyone who does not feel there is bullet drop, needs to spend more time under a scope.
I snipe from tops of buildings.
I snipe from the tops of hills.
I snipe from the cranes.
I move only when I want to move. I could care less if 4 of em' spot me, thats 3 or 4 more kills coming towards me.
If an enemy climbs ur ladder and gets the claymore, parachute down...goto another location with a birds eye view of your last posistion, he'll throw frags this time, then climb up, run around looking for ya and then they almost always will stop and stand still after they cant find you....whammo...lolol this my favorite laugh by far..
The 2 post by Dracul and real-maton were well thought out and all good points from experience.
I'm not much for 'guides' and posts authoring, but I just wanted to point out that I dont follow hardly any of the cardinal rules and w/ over 11,000 sniper rifle kills, not following them works just fine for me.

Indeed.
Alpha as fuck.
I gotta agree with SinnFein, maybe i haven't got as many kills as him. But that's the same strategy I use, when they spot just make sure you kill them first. Ofcourse it does require some practice to aim and kill a guy within 2 seconds, but that's why practice makes perfect.
I tend to stay low behind some rocks or a tree. Up high is good but for me, it's easy to spot snipers up high because you can see their silhouette against the horizon. When I'm on a roof I try to find a spot where there is a wall or something behind me to hide my silhouette.
When I'm spotted on the ground and being chased I just run in an alley and drop a claymore. Just be sure to turn around and drop it.
It's going to be nice to be able to pick up your claymores after the patch.
I still wish we could adjust our gullie suit to match the terrain. Like RL. Maybe pull out the knife and use it on a bush. You could get a bar on the bottom that indicates your progress in making the suit. Kinda like the bar that appears for repairs and when healing.

I'm currently working on a very detailed sniper guide, i'm hoping to get it finished by early/mid February so watch this space!
I'm not knocking your guide or anything. I agree with most of the things you said (the major exception being that people shouldn't hide on rooftops). I just know that there are some guys out there with a k/d of 3.5 or something with the rifle. I'd like to hear what they've got to say.Rizen_Ji wrote:

Yep
How come so many people seek to undermine what others write in these forums, criticise my Sniping Guide all you like when it's written and on here, until then just wait eh.

Just want to help, if you can write something that is more detailed than the sum of those 4, I would love to read it. Seems like a challenge though.
Good luck,

I've spent years playing as snipers online, and trained with Royal Marine snipers in real life, i'm sure not all of the stuff i have learned applies to this game but i'm sure it will help.

May I ask you few questions?[GDC]SinnFein wrote:

When you're saying "bullet drop exists" - do you mean random one or distance-dependent bullet drop by the height?
What distance is suitable for sure kill with M95? M24?
What average ping do you have?

Bullet drop exists but isn't much of a factor until you start getting around 150 meters. That's a long way in BF2 so I wouldn't worry about it much.
practice and learn from your mistakes, and take what everyone says and use it and you will start to be a sneaky pain in the @ss and dont sit in one place to long or you will be eating lead, a good sniper dont happen over night.
PS you all have good ideas that i have used in my combat and want to thank all for you'er in put

I know the question wasn't to me but...
I am also certain that there is bullet drop, for example - Today i was playing on Wake, defending the South Base from attackers from the Beach and Airfield, i spotted an enemy sniper about 300 metres away, he took a shot at me, i realised he clearly had no idea how to compensate for bullet drop so i let him have 2 more before drilling 1 shot straight through his skull. And before anyone tells me he was a noob - he was a Sgt Major and i'm a 1st Sgt.
I would say that you can make an accurate shot without the use of bullet drop 120 metres, at 150 you need to be 1mm above the target, when it reaches 200m 2mm then 3mm for 250, 4mm for 300m
I don't snipe if my ping is under 50
