I read Cougar's post, and honestly couldn't be bothered reading six pages of religion arguments.
Whether you believe in God, Jesus, Allah, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or the fact that none of them exists, it all comes down to one thing: Religion is a private and personal matter between you, possibly your family, and whatever god you do or don't believe in. When you make religion a public issue, you are an idiot.
What like keeping Church & State separate? Who is the idiot?
Or
Allowing a non-scientific theory like I.D. (the "wedge") being taught as science in public classrooms? Who is the idiot?
Or
The Abortion issue.
Or
Religious intolerance/suppression?
Who is the idiot?
If someone earnestly believes his worldview is threatened by science; and then is political (public) in their actions - in advocating a stance against it. They may be misguided - they might be holding onto a misconception - etc - but they are not idiots. Their sentimental attachments to their beliefs are not an indication of idiocy... nor is the opposite (lack of attachment to a belief-system).
What about a person attempting to keep (publicly fighting to keep a) a religious agenda like I.D. out of the classroom - are they idiots?
Cougars generalization is not a definition of an idiot (cubicle atheist-guy), anymore than it would be to call a close friend of mine (who is uber religious; and constantly talks about the Bible, because I know so much about it) an idiot - because she wants to convince me of the beauty/glory of belief (of/in God). I do not think she is an idiot - nor do the discussions even bother me - in anyway at all.
