A yottabyte (derived from the SI prefix yotta-) is a unit of information or computer storage equal to one septillion (one long scale quadrillion or 1024) bytes. It is commonly abbreviated YB. At this time, no computer has one yottabyte of storage.

Because of irregularities in the definition and usage of terms for byte multiples, the exact number can be either one of the following:

1 septillion 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes — 10008, or 1024
1,208,925,819,614,629,174,706,176 bytes — 10248, or 280 (the correct term for this measure is "yobibyte". See binary prefix.)

"In ten years, the volume of online data accessible either on the Internet or on corporate networks is expected to approach a yottabyte, or 1 trillion terabytes." —"IBM Unveils Storage Capacity on Demand for Growing e-businesses," Business Wire, October 27, 2000
Thats shocking!

I have 2x500Gb HD. It's more efficient. I can keep my stuff on one HD and my wife can keep her stuff on the other. If it was all on one HD, she'd mess up my nicely organised files.

You can do the samething with a partition too you know...  best for keeping windows seperat from you data if you only have one drive to work with.

Why does anyone need that much storage on a home based PC? i have a VERY hard time filling up 300 gigs
I have a bit more than 1TB data on my pc and I have about 300 DVDs that I burned that have data on them. About another 150 DVDs with torrented films. The fast internet at university is making me poor.
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

You guys hadnt even heard of a terrabyte before? This amount of storage has been around for the last 10 years, just not in an affordable form for the average computer, most servers will had 10s of terrabytes of storage. My uni for example must have atleast 100 terrabytes.

True, but we do a lot of video editing and needed a lot of hard drive space. Initially I was going to go for a 750 and a 500, but the 750 was still way too expensive at the time.

On the same kind of topic, let us forget Blu-Ray & HD-DVD. They'll be useless in a couple of years for a possible two reasons.
1. HVD will finally become reasonably priced (3TB storage on one disc).
2. Streaming media will gain acceptance (after becoming - surprise, surprise - reasonably priced).
Both of these mediums are available, just not quite mainstream.
Here's praying for them soon.
