I'm ordering some new computer parts in the next hour or so and I'm wondering what would be the best motherboard upgrade. The system will be running an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB of Corsair XMS E.P.P. Any help would be appreciated. Sweet sweet karma for any help.

I also have one other question. When installing a new motherboard is it better to reformat your OS harddrive, or just install the new mobo drivers over the old ones?? Thanks in advance!

I've only listed a couple motherboards that I looked up really quick. Please feel free to make some recommendations.

Asus Striker Extreme nForce 680i SLI, works for me

i swapped it from an evga 680i, after a load of problems. didn't have to reinstall the OS, it just booted up and carried on.

Based on some reviews it seems like the one listed under the Striker is pretty much the same thing, minus a couple tweak functions and the name "Striker." Any tech wizards out there know much about this?

I have the feeling that nVidia's 680 chipsets are just like the 8800 gfx series - something that will be replaced by soon for good. If you have the time, wait and get an Intel P35 chipset. Otherwise... well, you won't be running DDR2 long anymore anyway, so rather get the cheapest of those motherboards, as they all don't support DDR3.

does anyone know when nvidia will update nforce to support ddr3 ram?

edit: the reason why I might buy evga 680i and ddr2 memory is because ddr3 will be expensive and absolutely no performance increase. of course ddr3 is the future but when I would have to upgrade again there would be uber 1600mhz ddr3 support and I would have to move from 1066mhz ddr3 to 1600mhz ones

I would honestly wait until DDR3 has been out for a while. Anyone who doesn't do insane overclocking is not going to notice any kind of difference between DDR2 and 3 I would imagine.

Thanks for the help guys... I think I'm just going with the Asus P5N32-E SLI nForce 680i SLI Socket 775. From the mass amount of reviews I've read it appears that this mobo is exactly the same thing as the Striker version, minus the placement of a few components and a couple tweaking options. Apparently you can even see the Striker logo underneath the logo of this one. Funny shit.
