The Log On to Windows dialog box appears. In the User name box, type Administrator. In the Password box, type your Administrator password, if you created one during Windows XP setup. If you have not assigned a password, or you do not know your password, leave the Password box blank. Click OK

unless you set a password by default it is left blank

Because typically the Administrator account has a password.

You can just press ALT+CTRL+DEL, DEL instead of all that if there is no password.
Err typically there is no password set for the admin account in windows XP ...thats why he should boot in safe mode and set one!
No. Typically there is a password for the Administrator account. Unless of course the person who installed the OS is retarded.

Every PC built by a mojor company I've ever used has had an admin password set. I'm fully aware it is not set by default, but it gets set by any supplier with any sense.

I don't see what your link is trying to show.

Typically there IS an Administrator password set for XP. It is not too hard to reset it though, although you can't do it through windows because if the windows executive block loads, so does the SAM - which prevents you from doing it.

Okay let's restart here. I want something that can login to my Dad's account/ have an account that won't be seen at the blue login screen or anywhere else. i need to keep it the way they left it. There can only be his account at the blue login screen, with the same password, looking exactly the way he left it. please tell me the solution will do this, and i will try it. please explain how to do each step, leaving out as much tech terms as possible- Not much is available for me to learn and i would not like to read a manual on terms. the best things about computers at my school is programming and if i wasn't in Honors math i wouldn't be able to take it next year, beacause it's originally availale to 10th grade, but i want to learn as much as possible so i crammed my schedule for next year with business and computer courses with no study halls so i'm going to try, but for now please excuse my lack of PC knowledge.

Personally I haven't bought a system for the past 15 years, people I know who have and ones I have installed on networks have, have recieved their Admin passwords on their get started guide thingys. Some vendors don't provide any indication of the password.

I know on Dell and IBM machines they don't set a password. Leaving the system vulnerable to local exploitation, but on machines from vendors that are less rubbish they do.

You can reset that password using the method I described earlier, with a bootable CD.

D'oh. I thought I had.

You can get the lite or Pro version, doesn't matter. Then burn it to a CD and try and boot from it. If it works, great. If not come and ask some more questions.

OK. Foolproof solution.

You are using a laptop at the moment, right? I assume it at least has a CD writer and you have access to a CD.

1) Get this (note the NT password recovery feature - that's what you want)
2) Burn it to CD.
3) If neccessary change the boot settings in the BIOS so the system boots from the CD before the HDD.
4) Use the Admin password reset feature
5) Reboot.
6) Log in as the Administator (which won't come up as an option on the welcome screen - unless in safe mode or if you "Hold Ctl + alt and pres delete twice." (not one I've ever tried, but sounds like it'll work)).

There you go. You are now logged on in an account that your dad is highly unlikely to ever check. Nor will it show up anywhere.

If you can't get into the BIOS to change the boot sequence (because of a password), you may need to reset your BIOS.

FBI Infragard Release: June 24, 2005

Problem:

DELL OEM XP Processional has a default hidden administrator account.  Use of this account will allow anyone with physical access to the computer to fully control the computer, add spyware, keystroke loggers, password stealing software and read all files, including temp files, local files, documents, and any email that has been stored locally.

DELL does not inform the installer of this account, nor give them the option of putting a password on this account. If a savvy installer finds the function to change the password for the Administrator account, they are warned that they could lose data. Security best practices REQUIRE a password on all administrative (and root) accounts.

FYI Bert        and Noob..... so your parents have set an admin password
