Here are my specs on my computer :

CPU:Pentium® 4 Processor 540 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz, 800FSB)
Motherboard:BTX Motherboard
System Memory:2 x512MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM

About a year ago I dropped in Corsair 2 x512 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM in addition for a grand total of 2gs of RAM

My question is : Can I replace the 1st 2 sticks of ram to something for powerful (example: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory) for a grand total 3gbs of RAM and NOT have it screw something up in my computer ???

I have a price budget I'm trying to stay in.

Although it depends on the motherboard it should work, Check the Maximum amount of Ram the Mother board supports.

To check the maximum amount do I need to find that somewhere in my computer or can I google it and find the answer?

Your RAM will only be as fast as your slowest sticks.

3 gigs are useless imo, DualChannel will not run on one of the sticks. If you´re going to spend money, go for 4096MB of your current RAM. My two €

EDIT: And what the Downy said

hmmmmmmmmmmm so I take it even having 2x1gb doesn't matter bc it will only fly at 2x512

Yeah, you'll need to buy all new RAM unfortunately, or just buy more of the existing type.

No, you will still have the extra amount of memory but it will run at the lowest clock speed 533mhz, of the memory

Does your MoBo support DDR2 800? Then yeah.

Wow, that looks like a great deal to me.
(BTW, If you only have 2 sticks, running in performance mode, it will be faster than if you had 4 sticks in performance mode if you didn't already know that)

Is it the clock speed or the amount of RAM that makes a better performance ?

I have never overclocked my system (don't even know how too)

The lower the clocks, the faster the RAM is generally speaking. The amount of RAM just allows you to have more programs open at the same time...or bigger maps, etc. Size doesn't matter (in this case)

I googled BTX motherboard and I have no idea if it can support 800

There's a website somewhere that someone around here might know that tells you automatically which type of RAM works in your system. Maybe someone might post that for you. Just maybe. I forget, sry-

To shorten this one!

Method1: buy another 2x 512MB of the same RAM you´ve already have. Now you got 2048MB´s in dual channel mode wich is enough to play in good settings (depends on your GPU too, righty-o?!).

Method2: buy 2x 1024MB of some new RAM. You old RAM is useless then. You wont recognize too much boost just because of the higher clocked RAM.

I found this newegg has a option where they showcase what RAM fits in computer

If I replace all 4 at the same time will that screw up my computer or should I replace 2, power up my computer and run a few programs, then replace the final 2 ?????

Won't matter. It will prompt you that there has been a change in memory size and ask for an "F1" confirmation. (on most mobos)

You would be an idiot not to get this... it was 215 dollars a month ago.

4-4-4-12 vs your 5-5-5-15

and 2.2v vs your 1.9v

for like 2 dollars more?
