this is from another topic at

Are servers for mods free? If they are please tell me how to make my own. I will give karma to the first person that can give a good answer. If the first person says no but another person says yes, I will investigate the person that said yes, and if he's right, I will give him karma instead. If it's wrong, I will give the other guy karma. And If the guy that said yes had a method that wasn't true (to getting a server), but someone else gave me the right method, I will give karma to the right method. Basically, you get karma for having the first right answer.

To start any sort of Battlefield server, whether it's a mod or not, (I don't know how BF2 works in comparison to other games) you need to buy or rent a server of your own, then install the Battlefield server software onto it. You can't really get a server for free, even if it's just for mods.

^^^Well you COULD host one...but unless you have killer bandwith or comp I would assume it would suck. Technicaly all it takes is the a computer capable of running BF2's stand alone server program. Downloadable from the EA website, or possibly already installed in the BF2 folder?

However some people on the PR forums were talking about hosting small games so a couple people could play together....

If you just want to mess around with a couple friends, and don't need something permanent you can use programs to create a virtual LAN, and just play a lan game.

The program they were using is called Hamachi

We played with Hamachi on a virtual LAN with about five people. It was so laggy. Apart from the person hosting it, we all had pings of about 400.

Wait I think I found a way. Go to my computer. Now look at the top of the window. If you do not have the adress bar, go to "View>Toolbars>Adress Bar" and check it. Now copy and paste this into your address bar
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2
If it doesn't work just navigate to that and find it.
Now you have a bunch of folders and files showing, including Admin, AdminUtlis, etc.
Look for BF2server launcher, it should have an icon with a rocket or something like that.
Click on it and a window will pop up called "BF2server launcher" that has list of server settings. These settings are for LAN servers (you don't want that). So go to the bottom of the window and find a little Dropdown Menu with the word "default". Right next to it there should be a green plus and a red X. Click on the plus. Now it will ask you to name something. You're naming you list for your server so that when you are done, you will have your own list of server settings. Name it the name of the server you want to make. My server's name is "Frag's Lair". Now here's what I did to the list.
The first thing you do is find "Internet" and click in the little square to the right of it, turning it green. This means it is now a world server and not LAN. Next, do your server message. the next few things I say, I want you to do: Server IP (click on it and click on "Choose from detected IP adresses". then click OK) Number of players needed to start=1 GO TO MY NEXT POST NOW!

Soldier Friendly Fire= 0
Vehicle Friendly fire= 0
TkPunishEnabled= unchecked
TkPunishByDefault= unckecked
VotingEnabled= unchecked
VoipEnabled= Checked
Now go to the Map's List tab
Add only one map
Then click START
It will bring up a weird looking boxy-like window with a black backround. It will load. This is called a Dedicated server. A dedicated server is a server that the host doesn't need to be on the server for it to be up. Although the host (admin) can always join it. The server will remain up until the Host ends it with the BF2Server launcher or by turning off his computer. I know this because you can do this in "Pariah" for the Xbox.
My IP is 192.168.1.100:16567 Try looking for it. I want to see if this works too, because it didn't show up on the list. Just try it.
*OH* and in my first post I forgot to tell you that when you load up the BF2Server launcher, you have to click on the dropdown menu under the "ServerSettings" and the "MapList" tabs and find Sandbox. By default it says BF2. Let me know if it works.
