There have probably been a million threads with this question, but I'm feeling selfish today, so don't be mean.

Anyways, i just got windows Vista Business edition free upgrade from when i got my new xp a couple of months ago. I am deciding whether to install it or not.

i have:

-D975XBX intel mobo
-160 gig samsung HD
-ATI radeon x1950 Pro
-2 gig DDR2 SDRAM PC 5300(333mhz)
-Intel C2D E6600 @ 2.4 ghz
got 5717 3DM06

would my rig be able to handle windows vista?

I'd wait until some decent drivers come out to support XP games and such.

But yes you could run it just fine.

iF IT AINT BROKE DONT UPGRADE.

I find XP to be a great operating system which cause very few headaches. Why upgrade to new and exciting headaches?

another question, if I upgrade to vista, does it erase the harddrive, or does it keep all the old apps/programs?

I would wait. There's no point in running Vista now, since nothing actually requires it yet.

IDK if Vista upgrade requires a full reformat, but it'd be best to do so anyway.

Why is that? 64 bit vista runs as smooth as server 2003 for me. For fast, very efficient, absolutely no driver problems.

Dunno what you're talking about, 64 bit is working great for me...

Nope.  It keeps it in a "windows.old" file

Don't listen to any of these fools who haven't actually tried it probably.

I made the jump from XP SP2 Pro to Vista Ultimate. Driver issues are not a problem because most are already in beta and work absolutely fine. Even as gamer, I have had little to no problems whatsoever. Make the jump to Vista, you won't regret it! It's a fantastic OS, I will never move back to XP ever again. Windows Vista bests it in almost every possible way.

I typed this message to you through Windows Vista and Firefox, after just playing some Battlefield 2142. No issues at all. Make the move, you won't regret it.

> More and more games are being built for Vista and Vista is the true DX10 OS. It doesn't require a full reformat to upgrade either. You'll have to make the jump sometime, do it now. I guarantee, you'll love it.

Though I wouldn't argue that Vista is NECESSARY at this time; it's cool if you got the extra cash (or a free copy like me!).  Based on your system specs, you should be able to run it in an enjoyable and eye-pleasing "Windows Experience Rating" of around "5.0".  (Though, you might want to consider adding some more RAM down the line...)  There are enough new features and things to explore to warrant spending the extra time to set it up on your machine...

... especially in a dual-boot format.  What is that?  Basically, you create a new primary partition (~25 to 40GB) on your hardrive and install Vista there.  Your system will then recognize two OSs at start-up and give you the option of booting either.  Pros: you can test drive Vista while holding onto XP, Cons: reserving HD space for a new OS, have to install programs for each OS, multi-partition management and planning can become an addictive headache!

Back to Vista performance in games... I tried playing BF2142 (read: system hog!) through Vista with generally good results.  With my PD 945/3GB 533/SATAI/X850XT setup, I run in HIGH with 4x AA.  I tried it in Vista mode and XP-compatible mode on my favorite low ping server (<20ms).  Both produced similar results and were very stable.  I got slightly less FPS in Vista vs. XP, but the overall play experience was similar.  HOWEVER, (I might have been having an OFF day, but) it seemed that the Vista gaming experience was just a tad 'off'.  I can't explain it other than feeling a little jerky or something.  Not full on slideshow action, just slightly less responsive.  For this reason alone, I have confined my gaming to the XP partition and spend the rest of my time exploring Vista.

All the talk of driver incompatibility is outdated news.  Vista has been out for a few months and 'most' of what you'll need is already out there.  In fact, Vista ran on native drivers for most of my hardware; though, upgrading your graphics, chipset, and sound drivers is prudent.

Take the plunge....  you'll like what Vista has to offer.
