TWO US Secret Service officers were injured today after a gun held by another Secret Service officer was accidentally fired at the White House.
One officer suffered a shrapnel wound to the face, and the other was wounded in the leg, said spokesman Darrin Blackford.
Neither injury was life threatening.
"It appears that at approximately 2.10pm (4.10am AEST) there was an accidental discharge of a service-issued weapon, which occurred inside the Southwest Gate at a security post near the White House," Mr Blackford said.
Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, Lafayette Park across the street from the White House and other nearby footpaths were all closed to pedestrians as a result of the incident.
Many police vehicles were also seen in the area.
However, President George W. Bush was not at the White House at the time.
He was on a trip to Blacksburg, Virginia, to attend a ceremony at Virginia Tech university following this week's shooting rampage.
The injured Secret Service officers were taken to George Washington Hospital.
