I would say that you can make an accurate shot without the use of bullet drop 120 metres, at 150 you need to be 1mm above the target, when it reaches 200m 2mm then 3mm for 250, 4mm for 300m

I don't snipe if my ping is under 50
Very well said Vega, I've seen ya around, if I recall you didnt start out as a sniper but found out was better than most other kits and you are a respectable shot tobesure. btw did you intend to say you dont snipe if your ping is over 50+, i think so:)

May I ask you few questions?

When you're saying "bullet drop exists" - do you mean random one or distance-dependent bullet drop by the height?

What distance is suitable for sure kill with M95? M24?

What average ping do you have?
of course you may ask, although I'm no expert and certainly not the best in game. I just have alot of time and IMO ...experience:)

#1 Drop, in my example refers to strictly the vertical/height reference.

#2 When I first started BF2 I was absolutely horrendous sniper, and I mean B.a.d.. The 24 just wouldnt do what i wanted...then my first unlock was the 95, I cut my proverbial sniper teeth with the 95, was pretty O.k with it nothing spectacular. Just when I had the 95 figured out, one day I picked up a 24......I was in love <dont tell wifey:)> I live and hopefully don't die much w/ the 24 only these days..

Sooo. I told that story to say that I dont recall my 95 set-ups if you will, nowadays I will only fire the 95 if my target is almost at my max viewing range ~300m+, to be honest those are the only shots I can make with that thing anymore:(

Lately, a dear friend of mine, Books_DCDF ( #8 on boards) got me playing Kubra dam quite a bit. I approached this map with the same mindset I used to have in city maps, and lets just say I was humbled:) I began routinely checking distances by giving order to various points on the map (to see the ranges) then through trial and error (and Books) got the 300+ shots down pat with the 24. Vega's #'s for compensation seem to be about right for the longshots. Kubra dam is a true test of AT&T, reach out and touch someone long distance tobesure. I would say 85% of our shots in there are all well above 270m+. Longest? I seem to recall ~354m headshot.

#3 Ping? I usually wont snipe much if my ingame ping is 60+, but heck sometimes it fluctuates so much during a map that I don't even notice until I miss more than 2x's. Then I trial and error a compensation set-up

I will give one tip: I wish i learned this in the beginning of my BF2 snipe days....I'm at #5 w/ rifle now and when i looked above at the lads in top 5, I was amazed at thier #'s of time with rifle in hand for the amount of kills they have. Then it dawned on me....PUT your rifle away when not shooting/scanning. This decreased my time with rifle in hand and FINALLY my K/d with rifle started to climb. I could care less about game K/d or kit k/d as I judge meself only with rifle in hand. I decided to experiment and started another account http://statpadder.com/cgi-bin/bf2i.cgi? … mp;start=0

yep, very little rifle time and a 15+ k/d...so I stopped playing the experimental account and transferred that knowledge to my main account..

Like I said lads, I'm not the best out there by far, I just truly enjoy sniping..

Thanks for VERY useful answers, guys.
But i have 2 more .... )))

Vega, when you've talked about compensation #s, you meant M24, are you?
SinnFein, why do you use m95 instead of m24 at long ranges?

btw my good ping is about 65... and average ping is about 92... and that's pain in the ass when it comes to shooting at moving targets...

Actually, sorry...to clarify. I will never spawn with a 95, if I'm mec or China, I pick another kit, hunt down enemy snipers until I find one with an m24 for me to steal..Sometimes if i'm out of ammo or whatever and i get a 95, it's then that i will only take the long shots as I couldn't melt butter/tripe at short/medium range with it:)

SinnFein,  I'm really impressed by the stats bro.  I'm just getting my "teeth" so to speak.  My skills need major tweaking and what you've put on the posting boards here really have helped.  Thanks.

Yeah lol i meant that i only snipe when my ping is below 50, I did start out as a sniper mainly but i also enjoyed Special Ops (G36C was my first unlock and i love it) and i'm an award collector so i've played all of the classes a fair bit and will continue to do so, the Sniper kit is the only one with a special place reserved in my heart however.

As far as the differences in bullet compensation between the M24 and M95 goes, i hardly notice it, i use the M95 a lot (sometimes over the M24 because i'm pretty good at taking out pilots) and occasionally the M24 when the situation calls for it - generally i can do just as well with the M95. I've found myself recently kicking some serious arse with the Type-88 and SVD, if you transfer the skills you learn from the bolt-actions over to the semi-auto's you will notice a difference - i took out an entire squad of guys ( 5 or 6 mixed weapons and 2 snipers) with a mag of my Type-88 and half a pistol mag a few days ago - i took my time, picked my shots and came out with only a few scratches.

I'll never be up there with the 'best' of the snipers who can put in hundreds of hours but i know i'm a force to be reckoned with.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one obsessed with my sniper rifle.

Like [GDC]SinnFein I created a second account, DEATH_TO_BUNNIES, that I use for the sniper kit weapons only (although, I did manage to run some guy over with my jeep and another while trying to airlift myself out of a very sticky situation).

I've worked pretty hard to try and keep my overall K/D and rifle K/D ratios up as high as I can (5.75/8.82 respectively) and all the advice given so far does indeed apply.  But like previous post say, there is not a given set of sniper rules.  Some things I like to keep in mind are:

Vantage Point: Very rarely do I snipe from level the ground.  Height definately has its advantages.  Most players don't look up to see what's around them.  You have the advantage of identifying if the enemy is alone or with his squad.  With some practice you can build some good anticipation and figure out which way he'll run after the first shot lands.  You will be far more prepared than your enemy.

Vision: Don't use your scope for the entire game.  Use it for occasional scans.  It's too easy to get sucked into the zoom and not realize what's going on around you.  On my machine my peripheral vision is better than my primary focus.  If I feel like I am in a relatively safe spot I will turn my view off to the side so I can see through the fog in my periphery.  Sometimes you can get a jump on an incoming soldier before he comes out of the haze/fog.  Also, keep your ears open.  Listen for foot steps, gun shots, the unsheathing of a knives.  Be quick with you pistol selection.

Communication:  Spot enemies for your teammates.  Don't be blood thirsty and try to take on all approaching soldiers.  It's been a good practice of mine to call out an enemy's location before I take my first shot.  There's really two advantages.  It alerts your team so they can either hide or take out the threat and it also keeps him up on your minimap.  I love calling someone out and putting a single shot into their chest.  They usually dive behind a building and I watch the little red dot slowly creep around the back and then around the front corner only to catch a second round the second they are exposed.  Another practice of mine is to talk with the commander.  I'm usually in a fairly inactive area that doesn't receive UAV support.  I might be pinned by another sniper and not able to locate him.  I'll see if I can't get the commander to do a satellite scan and call out the enemy's location.  Then I can decide to either take a few shots or retreat to a secondary perch.

Location:  Each player is different, but my preference is to stay out of the way of major battles.  I like to find a nice perch and to pick off lone wolves or small squads (usually medic first).  I like to set myself up at the ends of long corridors that are frequently used by the opposition.  If you've played the game for a while you know where players like to travel.  Use that to your advantage.  It's much easier to put a hit on someone running toward or away from you than it is against a player that is running perpendicular to you.  Rest your gun and let the target run into your crosshairs.  This gives you time to settle your rifle and get a more accurate shot.

Anyway, I've spent far too long on this post!  These were just a few things I try to keep in mind while sniping.  It's all about experience and preference.  Good luck and happy hunting!

Post Script: I too prefer the ranking system over at the Stat Padder website.  #4 ain't so bad...just need to build up my kill total.

i pride my self in great sniper work...ok ill let you in on a few tips (i didnt read all the posts soo if someone alredy said this, meh)

1- when aiming at a moving target dont keep the crosshair on the guy and dont lead just place your crosshair about 3-5 meters infront of him and as soon as he hits the crosshair shoot, this is gauranteed to hit everytime unless they duck or when you clik you move the mouse.
2-use m95 for closer range righting shoot your oponent once and the switch to your pistol and hope for a hit.
3-m25 is good for longer range stuff, you wont hit with pistol at the long rage soo just try to hit the guy twice.
4-stay prone, small target, big miss.
5-dont waste ammo on helicopters unless they arent moving, aimfor gunner if you hit the pilot the gunner will just take over and fly away, most chopper pilots wont even notice a dead gunner before you have reloaded and killed him.
6-use claymores wisely, if you move past an enemy location drop a claymore near them and keep moving soo they cant shoot you in the back.
7-let you oponent come to you.
8-if outnumbered throw two nades hit the deck and start sniping, most likely you will win if they arent competant under pressure.
9-always try your best to get the height advantage nothing easier than shooting down on a guy.
10- make sure the commander is kewl with you, if shit gets hard you can always call for arty support.

ohh yeah if there is a fuel drum near an enemy shoot it, makes you look like a big shot, especialy if they die.

actually you can, tho its probably a fluke. i have actually sniped guys with the pistol after running out of rifle ammo. use th scope to find still targets, line them up, and switch to pistol without moving, aim button, then fire - sometimes it works!!

edit: and i mean at long range - pretty much at the limit of draw distance. pistol sniped the outline of a guy behind the gun of a FAV this way, on Ghost Town.

not enough people actually bother doing this - always do this if possible. it's a fatter target and insta-kill.

Owtch man, that hurt.

I don't know how you play the game, how you shoot or how good you actually are. Your accuracy's good, but then again so is anyones if they take shots at choppers with an M95 all day, (not saying you are, but there are people around.)
I don't know if you take moving target shots or wait until they're still. It's each to his own really. If you want to know how to get the bullet where you want it every single time?
That's simple!
Practice!

Especially with moving target shots you need practice so you can tell when to pull the trigger.

Even though you don't seem to think much of me, I am a good Sniper, either your equal or maybe even better. Sure as Hell my stats don't say that, but when I was starting out playing BF2, I played nothing but Sniper, which was a bad idea, (three months ago my accuracy was 29% with a Sniper Rifle. I'm climbing back from a very slow start you must understand.)
Take my advice, and the advice of the others who have made guides. You may be looking past the very things you need because you feel that you're better than us. You may have better accuracy, and a better k:d ratio than me, but I promise you if you ever went up against me in a Sniper's Duel I'd be an extremely worthy adversary.

Not a flame, I'm saying this with no bitterness or anger. It's blowing my own horn a bit but I get a lot of people undermining me because my stats don't fully do me justice, and I'm getting kind of sick of it.

By the way, I have discovered the joys of the M24 again. I decided to drop the M95 and use the smaller rifle for a while. I think I'm converted. Headshot after headshot, man it was beautiful.
