well you cant force someone to leave his kitchen knife at home but most 'combat style knives' are forbbidden.
I'm not too much into the weapon law but you need to qualify yourself by shooting under supervision for quite an amount of time and then you can apply for a weapon license, which goes together with a psych-test and some other rules. plus only semi-automatic, non-military weapons are allowed. Oh and the amount of weapons you can posses is also limited and you are not allowed to wear them in the streets. if you go to a shooting range you have to put your weapon into a locked case.
I think the german weapon law is relatively strict as far as I've heared something about it (two of my friends have a license)

we're not talking about whether people should be allowed to own guns or not.  the question is, do "gun free" zone make sense in a gun rich country like the US?

thats fine, i didnt say "majority of america"  i said people that carry guns LEGALLY....thats why i capitalized it the first time so you wouldnt try some lame argument like this.
Apart from the fact that your statement assumes that most gun owners are particularly responsible and upstanding citizens, your theory of safety only works if everyone has a gun.  I presume everyone includes the majority of Americans.

you dont understand my point.
when i turned 18 i loved to fight also, thats why no one sells 18 year olds handguns legally.
Which then leaves 18 year olds defenceless.

he might be, but that doesn't necessarily make him wrong in this instance.

focus on the question: does it make sense to have gun-free zones?

The American Government has already fucked up by letting every one have a gun in the first place. They've simple backed them self's into a corner. Now any one can get a gun and go on  a rampage. The should make a law that every important place should have a armed security guard or some crap like that. America's already skewed itself because of its stupid gun laws.

If you seriously think that is possible you have a IQ of 19, maybe 20. Hell for one, that would be a police state, something I dont think anyone(besides maybe ol' Bubs) would stand for.

No, having gun-free zones in a gun-filled US does NOT make sense.  If someone decides to go on a suicidal rampage, I don't think they are really going to care about a gun free zone.  Do you really think a gun-toting criminal would pause to consider the gun-free zone?  No.  A gun free zone would only hurt the gun-owning, law-abiding public.

I voted yes.

The only concern is that teaching kids can be really stressful. How long before a teacher snaps and uses the gun provided by the state to kill?

I definitely see the irony in making it difficult to carry guns and then wishing someone had a gun at VT.  But part of the problem with this issue is that massacres are extremely rare. On the other hand, people getting angry at each other, or people feeling suicidal, or people who are mentally ill are pretty common. I don't think it makes sense to set policy based on the rare event rather than the everyday occurrence.

I Saw Somewhere A Story About A Town In The Midwest That Made A Law That Everyone Who Could Legally Own A Gun Was Required To Carry A Handgun At All Times , I Guess They Don't Believe Gun Free Zones . Also Their Crime Rate Went Down To Zero . I Guess Crooks And Nut Jobs Went Else Ware  For Easier Victims

Wouldn't It Be Easier To Not Capitalize Every First Letter Of Every Word When you Post?

Luckily, the only thing I ever use firearms for is to facilitate target practice. That being said, I'm not scared of my neighbors, but I do want the upper hand if someone approaches me with a knife or blunt object with hostile intent. But then again, nothing's ever certain.

Its pretty obvious  these people  look for the most helpless amongst us,

People coming out of air ports churches, school yards,

They never start trouble at a rifle range, gun show or South Bronx after hours clubs.

The old west was actually much safer.

As our gun laws become more severe our country becomes more dangerous.

But don't try and tell these people.

This sort of thing isn't an issue of gun control, it's an issue of the ineptitude of medicine to find and help the people who perpetrate such crimes.

I feel much safer with a gun and a promise then I would with just a promise. By the way, Im not only talking about neighbors, people are people, thats why once someone gets in power, they dont usually get any better.
