I am going to buy a laptop, however I am not sure which one to get. I know roughly what I need.

I need this laptop mainly for university, so it needs to have wireless capabilities and other standard features. I also would like to play games too. Not necesarily high spec games like BF2....but enough power for say Rome Total War. Will be using it to watch films etc etc.
I reckon 1gb memory and preferably atleast 1.6 porcessor speed.

I found a dell laptop that looked really good, however I read so many reports about their unreliable hardware.

Sony are a good name. I found this laptop which forfills most of my requirements.

Do you have the full 9k to spend? if so have a look at ROCK

Edit: looking at that Sony laptop I wouldn’t bother with anything with shared graphics

No... I would go with a dell XPS, really nice and if ur spending that much, u can easily get a better GFX and more RAM... 7950 GO GTX is the best atm I believe. Hopfully there will be dx10 cards when I get one, when I go uni next year:)

Just checked out, and yes the XPS is more expensive, but I would rather get it than the one above...

Whats your budget? I can recommend you a toshiba laptop with an mxm port so you can upgrade to future graphic cards without buying a whole new laptop.

Yeh, if buying a serious laptop, make sure its upgradable. Big problem with laptops, often on a cheap unit, or a dellbox, they can be un upradable, for whatever reason, so like david mentioned, get a mxm port version

on a more serious note, try the UK dell factory outlet site. Some great laptop deals on there. Including XPS ones for waaaaaaaaaay cheaper than normal

I love my laptop (check the sig). Pretty good CPU, decent graphics, nice and big, and super long battery times (with the extended battery i push 10hours with normal work, wifi on, screen at about 50%).
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Try out this one:

Asus G1, 'tis quite nice and cheap.
It comes with its own bag and mouse, as everyone hate trackerpads. EVERYONE.
