BBC1 are running a mini-series - Superstorm - at the moment. It's a docu-drama set in the near future around an allegedly fictitious US government backed secret organization researching the possibility of altering the course of/weakening/modifying hurricanes off the coast of the USA.

In parallel with this, and immediately after each episode, BBC2 are running a 'popular science' series - The Science of Superstorms - covering the science behind weather modification.

So, weather modification - fact or fiction?

Discuss.

I think its possible but I think we're still too technologically behind to do this yet.

According to the The Science of Superstorms programs - we've already done it - Project Stormfury and Project Popeye - Apparantly China do it all the time and Russia 'seeded' clouds after Chernobyl so the radiation would get rained out.

After the Katrina and Rita hurricanes, there was a meteorologist who quit his job to prove that Russia caused the hurricanes. He stated that their paths were to similar to not be controlled.

Yep, its possible. On a local scale, its all about chemistry. On a global scale, its all about thermal physics. Get enough computing capabilities and infrastructure and its definitely possible.
